Are you ready to fire up the grill for some perfect burgers or brats doused with delectable mustard? Maybe gearing up to fry up some wings and drummies? Or maybe you’re just going to check out some fireworks. All of this with the proper social distancing of course. I dunno. Maybe just watch Independence Day instead. That movie is pretty awesome. Remember Mars Attacks!? I didn’t like that movie until I saw it for the third time. Now I appreciate its campy comedy.

If you’re doing all or none of these things, that’s cool – we’ve got a “Dependence Day” trailer from the upcoming Destroy All Humans! remake for you to check out.

Unfortunately, the game won’t be available this weekend, but it’s coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on July 28. Observe the chaotic mischief below as we explore the terrifying but humorous possibility of an alien invasion in 1950s America. Take your flying saucer out for a spin!

Games With Gold: July 2020's First Batch Of Xbox One Games Out Now

[Update 7/1: The first batch of games are available for free now, including WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship and Saints Row 2. The next batch will be available beginning July 16.]

June is almost over, so it’s nearly time for a refreshed Games with Gold lineup. Microsoft has announced the four games Xbox Live Gold subscribers can claim in July. Like usual, the lineup includes two Xbox One games and two backward compatible Xbox 360 games. In what’s becoming a trend, July’s Xbox One offerings will likely be of interest to racing and sports fans.

All throughout July, you can grab WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship, a rally racing game that released last year. WRC 8 has a robust single-player career mode and more than 100 tracks across 14 countries. Online multiplayer boasts weekly challenges and an esports mode with tournaments. New to the series with WRC 8 is the dynamic weather system, which alters track conditions by introducing elements such as rain and snow.

The second Xbox One game, Dunk Lords, will be available from July 16 to August 16. Dunk Lords is a beat ’em up basketball game with a large cast of characters with unique attacks. It’s over-the-top by design, combining arcade basketball with combat. Dunk Lords has a story mode that can be played solo or cooperatively with another player, a cooperative gauntlet mode, and an arcade mode that supports up to four players.

For the first half of the month, subscribers can claim Saints Row 2, the Xbox 360 era open-world action game which puts in the role of the leader of the Third Street Saints. Saints Row 2 is where the franchise started to lean into a comedic tone, separating itself from the similar gameplay style of Grand Theft Auto.

And in the back half of the month, you can grab Juju, a cute platformer starring a shaman panda and his lizard pal Peyo.

Some of June’s freebies are still available now, so don’t forget to grab them before they’re gone. Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse and Sine Mora are free until June 30, while Coffee Talk is free until July 15.

DreamHack has renewed its partnership with recycling brand Pantamera for 2020. The two will collaborate on a new talk show format to be produced in the DreamHack Studio in Stockholm, Sweden. Pantamera will also have a presence at DreamHack Winter in December.

Pantamera is the brand used for all marketing communications by Returpack, a privately owned company responsible for can and PET bottle recycling in Sweden. DreamHack and Pantamera have been collaborating since 2016, and last year raised over 534K SEK ($57.7K USD) in a charity drive for Musikhjälpen. Financial terms for the deal renewal were not disclosed.

Last week, DreamHack announced its plan to roll out a lineup of original content in an effort to develop an offering not directly tied to its events. The company has also recently secured multiple partnerships for its League of Legends tournament brands UKLC and NLC

Ludwig announces LACS 2 with qualifier events – Daily Esports

Ludwig Ahgren announced the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2 in a tweet on June 30. The LACS 2 will be an online Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament with a prize pool of at least $15,000. Notably, this will be the largest prize pool of any Smash event since the beginning of the year.

Ludwig hosted the first edition of his Championship Series in December 2018. This was a 16-man netplay invitational, with two of those players getting in through a qualifier event. The LACS 2 will work similarly, albeit on a much larger scale. This event will have 64 players competing, with 24 making it in through two qualifiers on July 11 and 12. Notably, these qualifier tournaments will be part of Brandon “homemadewaffles” Collier’s Rona Rumble series.

So far, Ludwig has confirmed nine of the players that will compete in the LACS 2. The star-studded lineup includes Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma, Joseph “Mang0” Marquez, Zain Naghmi, Justin “Plup” McGrath, Cody “iBDW” Schwab, Johnny “S2J” Kim, Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni, Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby, and Kevin “PewPewU” Toy. In addition, other players not mentioned in the announcement video will likely receive automatic invites.

      More about the LACS 2

The LACS 2 is possible thanks to recent changes to Slippi. Developer Jas “Fizzi” Laferriere recently introduced rollback netcode and integrated matchmaking to online Melee through the latest Slippi build. This allows for a smoother netplay experience across longer distances. Previously, Melee netplay tournaments could only run effectively with entrants limited to a specific region. But now, the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series can incorporate all of the United States and other parts of North America.

Alongside the LACS 2 announcement, homemadewaffles announced Rona Rumble Crew Battles. This winner-take-all event will take place from July 9 – 10, and it features a $5,000 prize pool. It will pit 12 regions against each other, with five players competing from each region. Here are the team captains from each region, who will select the remaining four players for their crews:

      • Mang0 (Southern California)
      • Zain (Maryland / Virginia)
      • Hungrybox (Florida)
      • iBDW (Tristate)
      • PewPewU (Northern California)
      • n0ne (Canada)
      • Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson (Southwest)
      • Avery “Ginger” Wilson (Midwest)
      • Sasha “Magi” Sullivan and Albert Luu (South)
      • Steven “FatGoku” Callopy (Pacific Northwest)
      • Anthony “Slox” Detres (New England)
      • Jonathan “Bimbo” Rocha (Mexico)

Psyonix Revamps RLCS With New Format and $4.5M Prize Pool

Psyonix revealed significant changes to its Rocket League Championship Series structure, as reported by the Esports Observer last month. The newly named RLCS X will feature a new competitive format and a $4.5M USD prize pool that the league is calling a “first-step toward a brand-new vision for the RLCS.” The new season is set to start in August.

The changes come after teams that had previously played in the Rocket League Championship Series sent a letter to league owner Psyonix with a list of grievances surrounding team control and monetization. The previous structure gave esports organizations very little control over teams in the league as the players were considered the owners of the slot by Psyonix. Additionally, any prize money won by the organizations’ teams was paid directly to the players.

According to Jack Etienne, CEO and Founder of Cloud9 (who left the league in June), the costs of running a team outweighed any sort of expected return on investment.

The new system actually abolishes the old structure in which teams were guaranteed slots in the competition, which is now becoming an open system with qualifiers and a single world championship.

The new RLCS X competitive format can be viewed here.

Skater XL Will Launch With Three Community-Created Maps Included

When Skater XL launches on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on July 28, it will contain three maps created by the game’s modding community during the game’s Early Access period on Steam. The maps will be a part of the game for all players.

The three maps are Streets (by Jean-Olive), Hűdland Training Facility (by Pactole), and Grant Skate Park (by Theo). A trailer and screenshots for these maps have been released, showcasing the work of the game’s community. Theo joined the development team after creating Grant Skate Park, which will debut in the game’s 1.0 release.

      https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/9EwA-Imsb78

In a statement released to press, developer Easy Days Studio co-founder Dain Hedgpeth praised the game’s modding community, which consists of 84,000 people who “have created thousands of amazing maps, fake skate brands and gear” in the game. states Dain Hedgpeth, Co-founder of Easy Day Studios. “Their creativity and passion have not only inspired us, but has become an integral part of the Skater XL experience,” he says, “and we want to pay homage to this by including some of their work at launch.”

Hedgpeth notes that this is “just the beginning” of the studio’s plans to highlight community-created content.

Grant Skate Park is a recreation of the iconic Chicago public skatepark, with a few small changes to make it easier to skate in a game. Streets brings together numerous street spots from different parks, and Hűdland Training Facility is an entirely original creation.

Skater XL faces some tough competition for skateboarding fans, as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is also releasing later this year on September 4. XL has drawn comparisons to the Skate franchise, but the next Skate game was only just announced, and is likely to be a long time away from release.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Twitch Streamers Flooded With DMCA Copyright Claims On Old Clips

Copyright strikes are an occupational hazard for many Twitch streamers and content creators, but a recent surge of DMCA takedown requests has overwhelmed the community. Now, Twitch support staff has responded to complaints, stating that the claims are focused on clips with background music from 2017 to 2019, and recommending that streamers remove them. The tweets also state that this is the first time that Twitch has received mass DMCA claims against clips. [Update: Dr. Disrespect has been banned from Twitch. Although the initial speculation pointed to this being related to a DMCA situation and thus resulting in a temporary suspension, sources have suggested the ban is permanent.]

The action also prompted a response from advocates like Ryan Morrison, better known as the Video Game Attorney. Morrison advised content creators not to counter the claims without speaking to an intellectual property lawyer. “You are quite literally telling them you are going to continue what you’re doing unless they sue you,” he tweeted. “Don’t threaten billionaire companies to sue you. Lawyer up.”

In follow-up tweets, Morrison noted that Twitch did not change their policies–instead, it appears that it’s merely being enforced in a meaningful way for the first time on the platform. He also said that streamers are mistaken if they believe that they can stream the game and its music because they “own it,” stating that you actually buy a license to play the game, and commercial use is usually not allowed under the terms of service.

He ends with a call to action: if streamers dislike these laws, they need to fight for policy change at the legislative level. “There are much more important issues going on in society right now, obviously, but the DMCA process needs a rewrite with where the internet is. Most streamers are 100% infringing. That needs to change,” he said.

If you’re looking to start your own streaming career, we’ve got recommendations on the best capture cards for YouTube and Twitch.

Update: In addition to VODs and clips, companies may also reportedly begin to target livestreams on Twitch as well. You can hear IP lawyer Noah Downs reference this in the video below.

Gran Turismo Partners With Getty Images For Licensed Photos Inside The Game

Following the announcement of Gran Turismo 7 during the PlayStation 5 showcase in June, Sony has announced a unique and interesting promotion surrounding an earlier entry in the racing franchise.

Developer Polyphony Digital has agreed to a partnership with Getty Images that will see Getty’s motorsport photographers take in-game photos of Gran Turismo Sport’s online events.

      https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/dkZ6m7-hp9Y

This is an extension of an existing partnership, as Getty Images worked with Polyphony in 2019 for the Gran Turismo Championship series. Its photographers snapped photos from inside the video game at tournaments in Nurburgring, New York, Salzburg, Tokyo, Sydney, and Monaco–and they were pretty spectacular as you could imagine.

This partnership will continue for the 2020 FIA Gran Turismo Championship series, which began on April 25.

“This partnership aims to bridge the gap between two worlds–virtual and real–to showcase the beauty and exhilaration of simulated racing to a wider global audience,” Polyphony said in a press release. “As esports and its surrounding ecosystem continues to see exponential growth and with brands and media around the world catering to a growing community of esports fans and players, Getty Images is once again innovating through visual content and leading the way in sport photography.”

Getty Images boss Ken Mainardis said in a statement, “This partnership with Polyphony Digital signifies the next phase of sport photography and the true growth that is occurring across the esports landscape.”

The images that Getty’s photographers take inside Gran Turismo don’t come cheap–the Getty website shows that the images start at $200 AUD for a “small” version of 72 dpi, scaling to $650 AUD for a “large” photo at 300 dpi.

As for Gran Turismo 7, the racing game was announced during Sony’s PS5 showcase, but there is no word yet on when it will be released. Find the full list of PS5 games revealed during Sony’s event for more on what’s coming to the next-gen console.
