Smash community uncovers numerous sexual misconduct allegations

Since grooming allegations against John “SleepyK” Lee went public, the Smash community has experienced a sort of revived #MeToo movement. Many Smashers have come forward to share their stories of abuse, often at the hands of prominent community members. Smash figures accused of sexual misconduct include Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada, D’Ron “D1” Maingrette, Cinnamon “Cinnpie” Dunson, and Richard “Keitaro” King Jr.

Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth released a TwitLonger accusing Nairo of engaging in sexual acts with him beginning in 2017. In 2017, CaptainZack was 15 years old, while Nairo was nearly 21. CaptainZack also claimed that Nairo paid him to stay quiet about their relationship after CaptainZack’s relationship with Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce came to light.

When the allegation first surfaced, CaptainZack and Nairo both denied it. However, Nairo deactivated his Twitter account after CaptainZack made his formal accusation. Nairo has since reactivated his Twitter account and issued an apology. In addition, NRG has removed Nairo from its competitive Smash roster in response to the sexual misconduct allegations.

D1 tweeted a simple “yo” in response to the accusation of sexual misconduct against fellow Smash Ultimate player Nairo. A few hours later, Kaitlyn “KTDominate” Redeker accused D1 of raping her in 2016. In her TwitLonger, KTDominate accused D1 of having sex with her while she was drunk. D1 responded by apologizing to KTDominate, while claiming that he was also drunk and unable to consent as a result. He also claimed that he couldn’t remember that night, and only knew what others had told him about the incident.

Other accusations in the Smash community

Troy “Puppeh” Wells shared his experience with sexual misconduct from Smash commentator Cinnpie. Puppeh claimed that Cinnpie engaged in sexual acts with him in 2016. At the time, Puppeh was 14 years old and Cinnpie was 24. While this allegation had circulated as a rumor in the past, Cinnpie and Puppeh both denied it at the time. Cinnpie has not released a public statement since Puppeh levied this accusation against her.

An anonymous Twitter account accused Keitaro of having sex with a minor in 2018. Keitaro confirmed the validity of the allegation in his own TwitLonger a few hours later. He confessed that 16-year-old “shiva” had gotten drunk while playing Super Smash Bros. against him as a drinking game. Keitaro admitted that he later engaged in sexual intercourse with her in a pool.

These are some of the most prominent Smash community members who have faced sexual misconduct allegations recently. However, the full list of allegations is much more expansive. A comprehensive thread of abuse claims is available on Reddit.

Smash communities ban SleepyK following grooming scandal

Local Super Smash Bros. Melee communities have started banning John “SleepyK” Lee following allegations that he had previously groomed a minor. Clementine Datta laid out her accusations against SleepyK in a TwitLonger posted on June 28.

Clementine’s TwitLonger described her relationship with SleepyK in 2017, during which time she was only 14 years old. It was initially platonic, but SleepyK later asked for explicit pictures of her and eventually asked to have sex with her, but she said no. One night during Super FamiCon 2017, SleepyK allegedly began to touch Clementine’s thighs in her hotel room, only stopping when another person walked into the room. Clementine noted that SleepyK eventually apologized to her and that she “regretfully instantly forgave him.”

Shortly after the allegations surfaced, SleepyK made a brief statement saying that he would create a formal write-up. However, SleepyK has since deleted his Twitter account and will seemingly impose a ban from Smash events upon himself. Notably, he did not deny the allegations against him. Rather, he called it “one of the worst mistakes” he had ever made and “unforgivable and inexcusable.”

Smash community responds to (and bans) SleepyK

Several Smash community members expressed feelings of disappointment and betrayal upon learning of SleepyK’s grooming scandal. Many had viewed him as a friend and ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Even so, some Smash communities were quick to enact bans against SleepyK. VGBootCamp has already put a ban in place, as has his local scene in Georgia.

Due to recent evidence & testimony, SleepyK will be banned for life from every one of our events and any future events we create. This includes:

          – Xanadu events
          – Pound Series
          – Glitch Series
          – The Script Series
          – Double Down Series
          – Apex Series

The SSB Code of Conduct Panel is the institution responsible for recommending bans in the Super Smash Bros. community. It has not issued a formal ban against SleepyK yet and will not conduct an investigation without Clementine’s consent. However, it has signal boosted Recursion’s ban to other communities, as Recursion is one of the Conduct Panel’s signatories. Some Smash community members have noted that SleepyK was previously a member of the SSB Code of Conduct Panel. However, he resigned before the panel was even fully formed according to Kyle “Dr. Piggy” Nolla.

The Conduct Panel has come under scrutiny recently, with #UnbanCaptainZack trending among Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players. Of course, this refers to Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth, who previously received a five-year ban for match fixing. Many players held that CaptainZack’s punishment was extreme, considering Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce was grooming him at the time. Nevertheless, the Panel maintained that CaptainZack’s ban was justified given information that remains hidden from the public.

Maister wins Smash Ultimate Singles at Ultimate Naifu Wars #13

Enrique “Maister” Hernández Solís won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Ultimate Naifu Wars #13 on June 26. It was his third consecutive online tournament victory and his second consecutive victory at one of Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada’s tournaments.

Maister predictably swept through pools, entering top 64 on winners side after a 2-0 win over Aaron “Asaladbar” Salazar. Even more impressively, Maister continued his clean sweep throughout top 64. He defeated Robert “Myran” Herrin, Angel Nunez (formerly known as “tAngelt”), and Markus “ShinyMark” Florido without dropping a game. Afterward, Maister found himself on winners side of top 8.

In Winners Semis, Maister beat Spencer “BestNess” Garner 3-1, marking Maister’s first game loss of the tournament. As it turned out, that was also Maister’s last game loss of Ultimate Naifu Wars #13. He proceeded to 3-0 Ricardo “Sinji” Mathison in both Winners Finals and Grand Finals. As a result, Maister won the event while only dropping a single game.

Other results from Ultimate Naifu Wars #13

Sinji had the best online tournament performance of his Smash Ultimate career, placing 2nd at Ultimate Naifu Wars #13. On his path to top 8, Sinji beat Noah “Sharp” M. 2-0, “Sonix” 2-1, and Adrian “Guts” Gomez 2-1. From there, he beat Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez Perez 3-2 and BestNess 3-1.

MkLeo made a solid run to 5th place at Ultimate Naifu Wars #13, even reaching top 8 on winners side. Notably, he did so while playing almost exclusively Greninja, a character he has not used in any major offline event. In the process, MkLeo beat Brett “8BitMan” Esposito, Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby, and Myles “MiLe” McKenzie. He didn’t drop a single game until he reached top 8, where he lost five-game sets to Sinji and Sonix.

Myran and Yezre’el “Yez” Askew both had impressive runs to top 8, despite entering the losers bracket fairly early. Myran placed 7th, defeating Luis “Lui$” Oceguera, Jonas “JoJoDaHobo” Ashby, Dabuz, and David “LeoN” Leon. Yez placed 5th, defeating Colin “colinies” Landals, Mark “MarkTheSDking” Simien, Angel, Jade “Middy” Vong, Guts, and MiLe. MiLe had a respectable 7th place finish himself, beating “IcyMist”, Yez, Gabriel “Epic_Gabriel” Romero, and Rick “Rickles” Aguayo.
