Cyberpunk 2077 Won't Include One Promised Mechanic–Here's Why

Game development is an iterative process. Features are often added and removed regularly during the development process as the team discovers what works best. For Cyberpunk 2077, developer CD Projekt Red worked on a wall-running feature, but it won’t make it into the final game. In a new interview, one of the game’s designers explained why the feature was cut.

Level designer Max Pears told GameReactor that while wall-running has been cut for design reasons, the game will offer players “a lot of flexibility” with how they move through the world.

“Ah, the wall-running” Pears said. “That is something that we removed due to design reasons, but there’s still going to be a lot of flexibility in how you move, that’s for sure.”

Cyberpunk 2077 goes all-in on ray tracing and Nvidia's DLSS 2.0

The first time we saw Cyberpunk 2077, we were convinced there was no way it would be a current-gen game, despite CD Projekt’s claims. Apparently we were wrong, but there’s no question the level of fidelity and sheer density of the game will make your graphics card sweat—especially because it’ll be a ray-tracing flagship.

On that note, while today’s hotly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay reveal felt pretty underwhelming after the stunning previews, Nvidia sent out more details on the ray tracing tech integrated into the game. It’s enough to stoke our excitement yet again.

We already knew Cyberpunk would have ray tracing, but without details about the specific effects. Today, Nvidia took off those wraps. While most games aside from Control support just one or two real-time ray tracing effects, Cyberpunk 2077 will integrate four different features into the game, as well as the faster, better DLSS 2.0 technology that can help reclaim frames lost to the strenuous lighting effects.

Here are the ray tracing effects you’ll find in Cyberpunk 2077, quoted verbatim from a release sent to me by Nvidia PR. (The screenshots and video in this article all show ray tracing in action in Cyberpunk.)

  • “Ray-traced ambient occlusion – Ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting. The result is a diffuse shading effect that darkens enclosed and sheltered areas and enhances the rendered image’s overall tone. In Cyberpunk 2077, ray-traced ambient occlusion additionally can be used with local lights to approximate local shadowing effects where shadows are missing.
  • Ray-traced diffuse illumination – This technique is used to capture sky radiance as well as emissive lighting from various surfaces, which is difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques. 
  • Ray-traced reflections – In Cyberpunk 2077, ray-traced reflections are used on all surfaces and can trace ranges for up to several kilometers. They are present on both opaque and transparent objects to simulate the way light reflects from glossy and metal surfaces by tracing a single bounce of reflection rays against the scene. This includes smooth natural mirrors like window glass, but also rougher surfaces like brushed metal. Unlike screen space techniques which can only reflect what’s on screen, ray-traced reflections incorporate the entire scene around the character, and can accurately represent objects outside the camera view or facing away from the camera.
  • Ray-traced shadows – Cyberpunk 2077 preview supports directional shadows from the sun and the moon. These shadows aim to be physically accurate and even account for light scattering from clouds. Shadows may be enhanced in the final release to support other types of light sources where it is needed.”

Better yet, these are all expected to be available in the game on day one, along with DLSS 2.0. Most supporting games have added ray tracing as a later update to the game.  

You’ll need a graphics card capable of real-time ray tracing to tap into those effects, of course. Right now, only Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 20-series GPUs support the cutting-edge technology. They’re killer, but if you’re planning to upgrade your system for Cyberpunk—we’ve heard from dozens of people with that very intention—it’s a bad time to buy a high-end graphics card right now. Better options should be available by the time Cyberpunk 2077 rolls out on November 19.

AMD’s potent next-gen “Big Navi” cards will include ray tracing and are expected to launch sometime before the Xbox Series X (read: November). Nvidia hasn’t said anything about a GeForce refresh, but it’s already revealed its next-gen Ampere GPU in data center form. Endless leaks and rumors point to a late summer or early fall launch for new GeForce cards.

The RTX 20-series will be two years old in August, so the timing checks out. Ampere leaps forward to a smaller process node, which usually results in significant performance and efficiency increases. The rumored GeForce RTX 30-series are expected to amp up ray tracing performance by a sizeable amount.

Always take rumors with a big pinch of salt, but if you’re going to splurge on a pricey new graphics card to see Cyberpunk 2077 in all its ray traced glory, consider sitting tight for a few months. Yes, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super is amazing, but you don’t want buyer’s remorse on an $800 purchase.

(Unless you manage to win one of Nvidia’s ultra-rare GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition graphics cards, that is. There are still a few contests floating around out there.)

Cyberpunk 2077 livestream reveals the ‘braindance’ and Mad Max-style mayhem

On Thursday, the team behind Cyberpunk 2077 revealed new elements of its highly anticipated role-playing game, including new gameplay mechanics. The Night City Wire livestream gave the world its first look at what it will be like to boot the game up when it launches on Nov. 19. It also revealed new features of its game world — including a wild new gameplay mode called “braindance,” which was drawn from the lore of the original tabletop RPG.

Here’s a rundown on everything we learned during the show.

An entirely new feature shown off on Thursday is called a “braindance,” or BD for short. It’s a way for the player to access the memories of non-player characters, which can be experienced as a recording loaded directly into their minds. As it turns out, the concept of the braindance has a long history in the lore of the original Cyberpunk tabletop game.

In the video game, the braindance allows memories to be viewed in first person — through the eyes of the NPC — and in third person. The latter view looks a bit like flying a drone around inside the scene. As a result, players are able to scan the environment for clues to learn new information and help solve puzzles.

Recordings are captured in several layers, including visual and audio layers. But they also capture peripheral data in the background. The gameplay shown features a braindance of an armed robbery, which ends with the robber getting killed. There’s a security camera in the scene, and it’s up to the player to discover where that feed is being directed to. Once uncovered, a video within the braindance shows up, highlighting the robber’s killer.

It’s a clever way to build nested puzzles within the game world, and the developers said they’ve been spending lots of time over the past year adding more and more braindances to the game.

The Badlands

CD Projekt Red also spent a small portion of time discussing Cyberpunk 2077’s seventh and least understood environment — the Badlands. The massive area surrounds all of Night City, where the majority of the game appears to take place. The developers said it’s filled with “different types of open-world content” that players will be able to encounter sandbox-style. The action appears to be centered around Mad Max-style vehicular mayhem.

Finally, the team at CD Projekt showed off a brand-new enemy called Adam Smasher. Like the braindance, he’s got a bit of a history with the tabletop game. Where the Maelstrom faction believes in body modification and implants to become more than human, Smasher takes that to the next level. The massive, nearly 9-foot-tall man is almost entirely made of metal. Players will encounter him in relation to the game’s corporate storylines, as he’s most closely associated with the Arasaka corporation.

Additionally, CD Projekt announced a collaboration with Studio Trigger, the Japanese animation studio behind Kill La Kill, Promare, and Little Witch Academia. The Netflix series is called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and its 10-episode first season is set to premiere in 2022.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Nov. 19, following a recently announced delay. CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will also be playable via backward compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when those next-gen consoles are released later this year — well in advance of when a true next-gen version of the game is available. The game is also headed to Google Stadia.

New Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and Edgerunners anime revealed by CD Projekt

Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City Wire livestream has provided 25 minutes of news and gameplay footage, plus the reveal of a Netflix tie-in anime.

Although the game and the livestream were recently delayed, the wait seems to be well worth it when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077 – the next game by The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt.

The 25-minute long Night City Wire livestream revealed a host of new details, including customisation options and the concept of Braindance, where you get to play a VR experience based on other people’s memories (a bit like the devices in the long-forgotten Ralph Fiennes movie Strange Days) and use it as a means to stealthily explore out of bounds areas.

The new trailer is called The Gig and, as usual, looks amazing. It’s taken from the game’s prologue and details the start of your career as main character V – although of course they can look and act completely differently in your version of the game.

Perhaps the biggest surprise reveal was a Netflix anime called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, although no real footage was shown as it won’t be out until 2022.

It’ll be directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill fame, with an original score by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

Cyberpunk 2077 will, hopefully, be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on 19 November. There’s always the chance it could be delayed again, but CD Projekt seem adamant that this is the final date.

Assuming it does come out when it’s supposed to the bigger question is over the next gen versions, as while the current gen versions will be backwards compatible on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 dedicated next gen editions won’t be out until 2021.

Latest Cyberpunk 2077 footage shows off a 'braindance' and more of the prologue

Cyberpunk 2077 has been a highlight of the last two E3s, so of course we couldn’t have this year’s Fake E3 without it. Today CD Projekt ran its debut Night City Wire stream, where we got probably our best look at Cyberpunk 2077. Less guided and less constrained than the previous demos, I feel like this is the first time Cyberpunk 2077 felt like…well, a video game. A very good-looking game, but a game nevertheless.

The highlight of the stream was probably the new trailer. CD Projekt stated that all of the new footage came from the prologue, which like The Witcher 3 means I’m guessing we’ve got a 10- to 15-hour intro ahead of us. I hope you’ve carved out some time in November.

We also got our first look at Cyberpunk 2077’s “Braindance” system. People with braindance implants can record their memories, allowing others to experience them later—and run them back, analyze objects in the environment, and discover secrets. In the demo, which also appears to be the braindance tutorial, it was used to figure out who killed the person recording the memory. I guess it’s a bit like the Arkham detective mode, mashed up with Observer’s playable dreamscapes.

Anyway, not the most eventful showcase. I think I was hoping for another hour-long tour of Night City, a la past years, and instead we got a 20-minute presentation with about five minutes of real footage. But hey, Cyberpunk is out in a scant few months, and I don’t think anyone’s sitting on the fence wondering whether this is “for them.” It either is or it isn’t, and I expect Cyberpunk will send this console generation off (and starting the next) with a bang. Look for it November 19.

Cyberpunk 2077 Night City Wire: New Gameplay And Details

Developer CD Projekt Red has premiered a new livestreamed presentation called Night City Wire that showcased new gameplay and details. During the approximately 25-minute long broadcast, the studio showed off a brand-new look at Cyberpunk 2077. Here are all the biggest details.

Cyberpunk 2077’s World

Cyberpunk 2077 will be split into seven districts. Six of these districts are sections of the game’s Night City, while the seventh is the surrounding area known as the Badlands. This area is much more desolate and lacks the high-tech environments of the city itself, and you could find dangerous threats. These include Nomads, who are dangerous cowboy-like enemies. There is also an almost completely mechanical cyborg called Adam Smasher, and he was originally from the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop game.


The presentation included a look at the gameplay mechanic Braindance, which allows you to essentially look inside someone’s head through a special device. We saw a thug involved in a robbery through his own eyes, giving insight into his whereabouts. In the “Editing” mode, we’re able to pause, change camera angles, and gain even more information on what happened at the robbery. A gun is scanned, as well, and sound can be isolated to make it easier to hear from specific sources. In the world of the game, Braindance was originally a technology meant for therapy and prisoner rehabilitation in the early 2000s. It will help to further explore the psyches of Night City’s characters past what typical interactions could do.

Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners Anime

One of the biggest surprises of the presentation was the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners. Coming to Netflix in 2022, it is being produced by Studio Trigger and features new characters within the same Night City location.
