Xbox head implies Game Pass unlikely to come to PlayStation or Nintendo Switch

If you were hoping that Xbox Game Pass would be available soon on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, you might be waiting even longer for that dream to become a reality.

Xbox head Phil Spencer said in a video interview with GameStar that the likelihood of the subscription service, which offers games on both Xbox and PC, launching on a Sony or Nintendo platform is low. While it was always a far-fetched dream that the service would be available on PlayStation, Microsoft and Nintendo have recently begun to offer cross-play and a few Microsoft first-party games, like Ori and the Blind Forest and Hellblade, have launched on Nintendo Switch.

But Spencer says that the full Xbox experience — which includes achievements, the Xbox Live community, and a full game library — won’t translate to different consoles, which he considers a deal-breaker.

“The thing about other gaming console platforms is we’re not able to bring a full Xbox experience on those platforms,” Spencer said. “The other competitive platforms really aren’t interested in having a full Xbox experience on their hardware. But for us, we want to be where gamers want to be and that’s the path that we’re on.”

Previously, Spencer had been more open about the idea of a cross-platform Xbox Game Pass as a long-term goal.
