Obsidian reveals new RPG, Avowed, for Xbox Series X
Obsidian Entertainment’s next game is called Avowed. The first-person, sword and sorcery role-playing game takes place in the world of Eora, the same setting as the popular Pillars of Eternity series. The announcement was made during today’s Xbox Games Showcase.
“We have always known war,” starts a voice in the cinematic. That’s when waiting archers launch flaming arrows from the battlements of a castle, through the clouds, which land amid a pack of skeletons miles away. The arrow continues to fall, deep underground. There a nameless hero stands with a shimmering sword in one hand, making Dr. Strange-like magic symbols with the other.
Avowed is coming to Xbox Series X, where it will be included as part of the Xbox Game Pass.
The Irvine, California-based developer is riding high after years spent reinvigorating the isometric RPG genre with Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. Microsoft took notice, and acquired the company in late 2018. But Obsidian still had one game of its own left to launch, the first-person action-RPG The Outer Worlds. The Fallout-inspired game went on to win multiple awards, including here at Polygon where we ranked it among the top 10 games of 2019.
Obsidian is also working on at least one other video game, an open-world survival game called Grounded. It shrinks players down to the size of a grain of rice, pitting them against insects and other monsters in a typical suburban backyard. Grounded will launch as a free-to-play title on Windows PC and Xbox One.
