A former Marine Corps serviceman has set a new world record for the most pushups completed in one hour. TShane Johnson performed 3,050 pushup reps earlier this month, surpassing the previous official attempt logged by Guinness World Records.

Johnson, who has carved out a career as an author, prednisolone acetate ophthalmic suspension eye drops for dogs motivational speaker and homelessness advocate since leaving the military, set himself this physical challenge as a way of supporting his fellow veterans. His record-breaking attempt went out via live-stream on May 1 as part of a fundraising event for the Purple Heart Honor Mission, a nonprofit which does outreach for recipients of the Purple Heart and provides education on combat-wounded veterans.

While training for the one-hour pushup record, Johnson was also faced with the challenge of recovering from his own injuries, having been nearly killed in a motorcycle accident which left him with scar tissue that left him with reduced lung capacity similar to that seen in long-haul Covid patients. He followed a special training program, designed by his coach Jamie McGrath, which accommodated his needs.

Johnson needed to pass 2,919 pushups in order to beat the record set by Jarrad Young in June 2020, and ended up trouncing that by more than 100 reps, completing 3,050 pushups in the allotted time, under Covid-safe conditions at Southpaw Training Center in Pineville, North Carolina.

The Guinness Book of World Records will be reviewing footage from the live-stream over the coming weeks in order to officially approve Johnson’s attempt and confirm him to be the new record-holder. And in the meantime, Johnson is already hard at work and back in training for his next pushup feat: he has his sights set on breaking the 12-hour record. The current rep count he has to beat is 19,325, and he will be making his attempt on November 10.
