After ten years of video game titles, two anime series, dozens of manga, and a giant line of official (and unofficial) merch, Danganronpa Decadence celebrates the decade anniversary on Nintendo Switch. This new compilation features all three main entries: Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, and V3: Killing Harmony. Plus, Decadence includes a fourth game, Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, an expanded version of V3's board game/dungeon crawler RPG hybrid mode. That's a lot of demonic teddy bears.

If you didn't laugh at that last joke, either we're lousy comedians, or you are new to the Danganronpa series. Luckily, this guide is for you if you have never played a Danganronpa title before. So get ready for some tips for making it through the killing school life in one piece with no spoilers. Now, it's time for "thrills, chills, KILLS!!!!!"

Day By Day

No, we're not talking about the song from Godspell. Instead, we're talking about your day-to-day school life in Danganronpa. Whether you're studying to stay alive at Hope's Peak Academy, keeping your mortality afloat at Jabberwock Island, or delaying death at The Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles, the chapter structure of Danganronpa stays the same. So here's a quick rundown of the different parts of school life. We'll bring these terms up throughout the guide.

Daily LifeEach chapter starts with Daily Life, which is exactly like it sounds. Daily Life covers story events and relationship-building moments before someone dies. Between story events, you will get sections of Free Time, which you can use to explore school grounds and develop bonds with your classmates.
Deadly LifeOnce a murder occurs, a school announcement gets made, and Deadly Life begins. Deadly Life is the game section when you investigate your classmate's murder in preparation for the class trial.
Class TrialThe Class Trial is the meat and potatoes of any Danganronpa game. This game section is when you and your classmates deliberate in hopes of discovering the murderer. On the one hand, if you and your classmates successfully vote for the culprit, only the culprit gets punished (dies a ghastly, flashy death). But, on the other hand, if you and your classmates vote wrong, everyone but the culprit gets punished (dies a ghastly, flashy death).

A Look At Your Handbook

Each Danganronpa title starts a little differently. Still, in the first chapter, your malevolent headmaster, Monokuma, will give you a Student Handbook tablet. These are your go-to menu for most aspects of the game. In addition, the student handbook has essentials like a Map of the school grounds, Report Cards (profiles) of your classmates, and school Regulations regarding day-to-day life and class trials.

During Daily Life, you can use your handbook to quick-travel around school, adjust your character skills, and study up on your classmates' likes and dislikes. In Deadly Life, your student handbook becomes more valuable as you collect Truth Bullets (evidence) while investigating the murders of your classmates.

Getting Around School

Remember that first week of high school when you're looking at a map struggling to find your next class? (Oh, and remember agenda books!? Are those still a thing?) Well, learning to navigate the school grounds in Danganronpa is sort of like that. Luckily, the Danganronpa series offers some conveniences to make travel easier.

For instance, the map in your student handbook offers quick-travel checkpoints that you can select to move to different areas without walking everywhere. Furthermore, the games introduce one area at a time. For example, progressing to new areas of the school grounds happens after you complete a class trial. Therefore, you will not get overwhelmed with a vast game world all at once.

However, if you are willing to put in the time, you will get rewarded for walking from place to place. We recommend it. Walking can level up your character, allowing you to equip more skills for the class trial. Plus, you may run into interactions with classmates that trigger special story events. See, your smartwatch isn't lying; walking is good for you!

Grinding For Monocoins

Monocoins are Danganronpa's in-game currency. You'll need them to purchase special skills, presents for your classmates, and in-game extras. Therefore, it would behoove you to garner as many as you can.

So how can you grind for monocoins? Here are some tactics for each game.

  • Examine specific items during Daily and Deadly Life.
  • Complete Class Trials.
  • Unlock the Raise skill by bonding with Celestia Ludenberg.
Danganronpa 2
  • Find hidden Monokumas.
  • Raise virtual pets in your student handbook.
  • Play the Magical Girl Miracle Monomi mini-game (unlocked after playing Chapter 1).
  • Complete Class Trials.
Danganronpa V3
  • Slap objects on the school grounds.
  • Complete the Death Road of Despair platformer mini-game.
  • Play games in the casino (casino coins can get exchanged for monocoins).
  • Complete Class Trials.

Making Friends

Making the most of your Free Time is a must in Danganronpa, especially when it comes to building bonds with your classmates. Of course, you can skip free time sections if you wish to move on with the main storyline. However, you will miss out on many telling moments that will teach you more about the other students.

More importantly, strengthening bonds with your classmates will unlock special skills that will give you buffs in class trials. Therefore, we recommend putting yourself out there and making some friends.

So, how do you build bonds in Danganronpa? First, approach other students during free time sections to spend time with them. Then, after spending some time together, you can give your classmate a present. If your classmate likes your present, a free time event will activate, and you will get to learn more about them. Finally, you'll need to correctly answer a multiple-choice question about your new friend to finish the event and successfully strengthen your bond.

Not sure what to give your new friend? Always refer to your classmate's report card (in the student handbook) to figure out their likes and dislikes. Furthermore, make sure to have monocoins ready to spend on presents. You can buy presents at the Monomachine and various school stores.

Investigate Everything And Everyone

Investigating crime scenes in Deadly Life can get quite tricky. During this section of the game, you will need to collect every Truth Bullet (pieces of evidence) to progress to the class trial. While it seems pretty straightforward, there are times when you may find yourself stuck trying to move on to the next clue. For instance, you may try moving to a new area and get a dialogue from your character saying, 'Hmmm…I think I still have things to investigate in this room.' But, of course, this begs the question, what are you missing?

If you find yourself stuck trying to find a clue, consider talking to your classmates. Sometimes the clue you are missing is not a crime scene detail but a witness testimony that will be important later. Furthermore, sometimes your character will not make a vital connection from a crime scene detail until talking to another character first.

Also, when you zoom in on a detail, like a dead body, make sure to check every detail. And if all else fails, keep clicking on everything. At the very least, you will garner some monocoins in the process.

The Class Trial

Every chapter in Danganronpa culminates in a Class Trial. This section is when your logic and deduction skills get put to the test. Each game handles class trials a little differently. However, you can think of each section like this.

Nonstop DebateThe Nonstop Debate is the core mechanic of a class trial. In nonstop debate sections, streams of text will flow across the screen. It is your job to use your truth bullets to shoot down contradictory statements or consent with accurate statements, depending on the situation.
Mini-GamesThere are plenty of mini-games throughout the class trial that will test your knowledge of the case in different ways. Some operate like word games. Others involve hidden object searches and even driving and snowboarding mini-games. Every trial includes a rhythm game near the end where you apply pressure to the culprit and force them to confess to their murder.
Multiple Choice QuestionsEvery once in a while, your character will have to answer a multiple-choice question about the case. Make sure you are paying attention. Wrong answers will eat away at your Influence Gauge (life gauge).
Closing ArgumentIn the Closing Argument, you will piece together a manga comic book that breaks down the murder step by step. This section is your final blow that will convict the murderer of their crime.

Keep in mind your Influence Gauge and Concentration Gauge, located in the screen's upper-right corner. The Influence Gauge is your life gauge and decreases when you make inaccurate statements and accusations. The Concentration Gauge allows you to slow down the action in the trial, making it easier to aim in the Nonstop Debate and avoid mistakes in the various mini-games. This gauge depletes with use but will refill over time. Therefore, we recommend using your concentration liberally.

The Nonstop Debate

Considering how vital the Nonstop Debate is, we're going to give you a deeper breakdown of how it works. Mastering the Nonstop Debate will help you better understand the other sections and survive the class trial in one piece.

As we mentioned earlier, during nonstop debates, characters will make statements that fly across the screen at a rapid pace.

  • White statements are less relevant statements that you should avoid shooting at all times.
  • Purple statements are white noise, usually irrelevant commentary from other classmates that often block essential targets. You'll need to shoot down white noise to access weak statements.
  • Yellow statements are weak statements. Therefore, you need to disprove these statements by shooting them with your truth bullets.
  • Blue statements are consent statements. In these cases, you can shoot a truth bullet at these statements to bolster an argument relevant to the trial.

As these statements fly across the screen, you'll have to cycle through your Truth Cylinder, located on the lower-left section of the screen, and find the right truth bullet for the situation. Later in the games, you'll encounter situations when none of your truth bullets are relevant to the debate. In these cases, you can absorb other classmates' statements and use them as bullets to shoot down weak statements.

When you shoot the correct statement in a nonstop debate, you will get this super satisfying result (see incredible action shot below) and progress to the trial's next stage.

Now that you know the basics of the nonstop debate, you may feel edging to get going. But please, don't get too trigger-happy.

Ask One Question At A Time

Comply with our girl Kaede and "listen first." If you are the kind of person that watches Law And Order: SVU and tries to solve the murder in the first five minutes, you need to slow down. The Danganronpa series has so many twists and turns it would make M. Night Shyamalan blush. There are plenty of red herrings, misdirects, and straight-up WTF moments that will keep you on your toes. Unfortunately, beginners often theorize the murder in their heads and base all of their logic around that. This move is a common mistake.

However, you don't need to know who the murderer is before the first debate even happens. Your job is to find contradictions and dispute them. Therefore, we advise you to take class trials one question at a time. For example, if the query is 'What did the killer do before going to the bathroom?', focus on that. If you shove your version of the murder into what the killer was doing, you will miss very obvious clues that answer the question.

No Need To Rush

In turn, it's okay to take your time during a class trial. The tone and circumstances of the trial may feel intimidating. Still, you will waste more time mindlessly shooting truth bullets in a panic. You don't need to fire a truth bullet in the first debate playthrough. If a conversation plays out to its conclusion, it will play again, and you will get another chance. Furthermore, your character may reveal a clue that will help you find the right target in the debate.

Shooting at the wrong targets in a nonstop debate will cause damage to your influence gauge. While you can get a game over by running the clock, you are more likely to lose a class trial by depleting your influence gauge due to foul shots. So, it's imperative to stay calm and listen carefully before acting on impulse.

Stack Your Special Skills

Last but not least, stack those special skills. These are power-ups that will make your trials significantly easier. For instance, skills offer buffs like increasing your influence gauge, providing handicaps for challenging mini-games, and improving your aim in nonstop debates. Building bonds with classmates and earning more monocoins will give you access to new skills. It is vital to continue leveling up your character to equip more skills at once.
