Thymesia – How To Defeat Varg

Herme’s Castle is the third area in Thymesia, and it is arguably one of the easiest. The challenge takes quite a dip, partially because Corvus is nearing the height of his power, and partially because the area is lacking in minibosses. This is all just a cunning ruse of course, as this area is hiding Varg.

You may not remember Varg’s name, but you will remember his armoured mug. Varg is the first boss you fought in Thymesia – you know, the one who brutally murdered you during the tutorial. Well, now it’s time to face him again, and this time, you need to win. Thankfully, he is quite the one-trick pony.

Varg’s Overview

Varg is a towering mountain of a man who carries an equally hillocky sword that he is very eager to ram through your supple frame. What he lacks in character, development, and finesse, he more than makes up for in powerful swings that can end your life in seconds if you aren’t constantly on the ball.

Varg is a brutal combatant, but he is not insurmountable. In fact, he is still not on the same level as Odur, which is staggering when you consider Odur with the first “real” boss in Thymesia and no boss since has come close to comparing in terms of challenge.

Varg’s Attacks

Varg has a big sword, lots of armour, and two whole phases in which to murder you. Despite his multi-phase design, he doesn’t change much during the transition. This makes him incredibly easy to learn, as you only need to learn his first phase and you’ll be able to handle his second.

All of Varg's attacks (bar his ultimate) are countered in the same way – Deflect them. His attacks have a long windup and come out slowly. He is imposing due to his size, but the counter is always to stand your ground and deflect.

AttackExplanation
Slash + Overhead SlamVarg slashes at Corvus and then follows up with an Overhead Slam.
Double Slash Varg slashes his sword at Corvus twice in quick succession.
Overheard + Slash + SlashVarg opens up with a powerful overhead slam and then follows it up with two slashes.
Back Dash + Slash + StabVarg dashes away from Corvus, slashes, and then follows up with a powerful stab
Back Dash + Jump AttackVarg dashes backwards and immediately follows this up with a jump attack

Phase Two

Phase two is largely the same as phase one. Varg's attacks mostly stay the same. The main difference is that Varg is much more aggressive now. By this, we mean that Varg will attack more frequently giving you less room to breathe. Not only that, he can combo some of his attacks into other attacks. These are no harder to deflect, they just change when you can counter.

On top of this, Varg gets an Ultimate Attack. He will use this attack as soon as phase two begins, and he will periodically use this as the fight rages on. The counter to this attack is to fall back. Simply unlock from Varg and flee.

Recommended Talents

Because Varg is so relentless – but readable, we advise taking Talents that improve your ability to deflect. Precise Deflect in particular is excellent as it increases the damage dealt to Varg whenever you deflect – which will be constant.

Long Claw is a Talent we advise getting as well. The damage it provides is excellent, the two-hit combo comes out fast enough that you can always squeeze it in and still be ready to defend between combos, and it will mince Varg very quickly once you get into a rhythm.

Outside of these two, increasing Sabre damage is always a good bet, as is Long Dodge. Remember, you can reset your Talents at a Beacon for free, so changing up your build to deal with Varg is very easy to do.

Battle Strategy

To beat Varg, you need to be confident in your ability to deflect his attacks. You will want to spend 99 percent of this fight in his face and deflecting his blows. Between combos, you want to attack with your sabre. The trick is to not get greedy. Varg is slow, but the cooldown between his attacks is rather short. You should aim to get a three-hit combo off – maybe stretching to four if you are brave.

Once his White Health is gone, transition from Sabre attacks to Long Claw attacks. Long Claw is a powerful two-hit combo that can be used in between every bout of deflecting. You should be able to floor Varg with it in no time.

If you do get hit by Varg, then don’t worry. He can kill you in about four hits, but the delay between his combos is long enough that you can easily drink a potion. This makes Varg very forgiving as you don’t need to frantically scoot away for a heal – you can heal without moving.

When Varg starts using his Ultimate Attack, all you have to do is move away. It is that simple. It has a fairly short range, so just leg it and then get back into the fight once it is safe.

Varg is a skill check more than anything. He is there to make sure you have mastered deflection. Varg is so readable, that it is entirely possible you will beat him without taking any damage.
