Subnautica: All Of The Raw Materials (& Where To Find Them)

When you first dive into Subnautica, you will notice a plethora of raw materials around you that have the potential to be used to craft different items. However, some are easier to find than others, especially once you are tasked with traveling further from your Lifepod in order to collect different specimens. It can be difficult to remember where you might have found something, not to mention frustrating when you have no idea where something might be located.

All of the raw materials serve a purpose and are used to craft different items that you will need if you want to beat the game. Subnautica introduces you to a brand new undersea world, which is why you should know what to look for as you explore the deep.

Biological Materials

One type of raw materials is known as biological materials in Subnautica and they encompass plants and things that can be obtained from alien life forms. These are spread across the various biomes and it can make them quite difficult to find if you don’t know what you are looking for or where you will find it.

Acid Mushroom

The Acid Mushroom is one of the first things you will come across and they are necessary if you want to craft some Batteries. They are bioluminescent at night so if you are having trouble locating them then maybe come back after the sun goes down. It can be found on the seabed or on the back of a Reefback Leviathon.

Alien Feces

The Treader Leviathon will drop alien feces and it can be placed into a Bioreactor, and it will yield 300 units of power. However, beware as this creature will attack, so make sure to follow the moving packs at a safe distance to collect their feces.

Location

  • Grand Reef
  • Sea Treader’s Path
  • Sea Treader’s Tunnel Caves

Blood Oil

Blood Oil has a couple of different uses as it can be put in a Bioreactor for 420 power, or you can combine three of them to make Benzene. It can be found on a Bloodvine or a Bloodroot and stands out as a red blob on these structures.

Location

  • Blood Kelp Caves
  • Blood Kelp Zone

Bulb Brush Sample

The Bulb Brush Sample can be planted in a Growbed to create a Pygmy Bulb Brush, or it can be placed in the Bioreactor to provide 420 power. You can also eat it, but it doesn’t provide very much nutrition so only do this if you are absolutely desperate. All you have to do is swipe your knife to collect this specimen.

Location

  • Bulb Zone

Bulbo Tree Sample

The Bulbo Tree Sample must be harvested from a Bulbo Tree using your knife. You can plant it in an interior or exterior Growbed, but others put it in the Bioreactor to obtain 420 power.

Location

  • Mountain Island
  • Floating Island

Chinese Potato

The Chinese Potato Plants yield Chinese Potatoes, which can be picked up for food, energy, or to grow. It provides +12 food and +3 water or if you put it into the Bioreactor it will give you 140 power.

Location

  • Floating Island

Coral Tube Sample

The Giant Coral Tubes are instantly recognizable in Subnautica and you can use your knife to collect a sample. It can be used to craft Bleach, which is great for Disinifected Water which is needed in survival mode, or it can be placed in a Bioreactor for 70 power.

Location

  • Kelp Forest

Creepvine Seed Cluster

The Creepvine Seed Clusters are the bright yellow orbs that light up the Creepvines, especially at night, and they are one of the necessary basic materials. They can be harvested, and then you can use them to craft Lubricant and Silicone Rubber, or you can place them in the Bioreactor for power.

Location

  • Kelp Forest

Deep Shroom

The Deep Shroom is found in clusters similar to that of the Acid Mushroom, but they are white in color. You can pick it by hand and it can be used to craft Hydrochloric Acid, or put in a Bioreactor for 210 power.

Gas Pod

The Gas Pods can be combined with Titanium to craft Seamoth Gas Torpedos (for one of the vehicles in the game), which can be an extremely powerful weapon against leviathans. You can also drop them from your inventory to create gas explosions, but beware as they can damage you in the process.

Location

  • Floating Island
  • Mountain Island

Stalker Teeth

Stalker Teeth are dropped by an aggressive species known as a Stalker, and this happens when they pick up titanium or metal salvage, which makes for some great memes. When a tooth is dropping you will hear a cracking sound and they are not obtained by killing these creatures. Rather, you must search the seabed near them or employ some other method to retrieve the teeth you need.
