PS5 sales now at 7.5 million as PS4 sells more games than any console in history

The PS5 continues to outsell the PS4 at the same point in its life, as Sony celebrates the PlayStation’s most successful 12 months ever.

Just as Microsoft announced their best ever results for Xbox so too has Sony for PlayStation, with a record-breaking year for the games division.

Sony’s games business saw revenues of $25.04 billion (£18bn) and profits of $3.23 billion (£2.33bn) during the financial year ending March 31, well ahead of the previous best year of $20.84 billion in revenues in 2018.

A total of 3.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles were shipped in the last three months, which given how the console is permanently sold out brings the lifetime total to 7.8 million.

That beats the 7.6 million record achieved by the PlayStation 4 during the same period, although, unlike the PlayStation 5, it didn’t launch in Japan and other territories at the same time as the US and Europe. Given the complications of the pandemic though, a direct comparison isn’t really fair on those grounds either.

The PlayStation 4 is the second best-selling home console of all time, behind only the PlayStation 2, and currently on 115.9 million units sold. So naturally Sony must be hoping the PlayStation 5 is headed for a similar level of success.

Unofficial estimates put Xbox Series X/S sales at around 4.5 million but it’s impossible to know for sure unless Microsoft release their own figures, which they haven’t done since the Xbox 360 era.

It’s also largely irrelevant until both consoles are permanently in stock, as currently they’re simply selling out as soon as they hit shops.

While Microsoft predicts its stock shortages will continue until at least June, Sony was even more pessimistic and admit the PlayStation 5 will still be scarce into its next financial year, which doesn’t end till March 31, 2022.

In other results, PlayStation software sales generated $6.22 billion in sales during the year, with an additional $8.59 billion for ‘add-on content’. PlayStation Plus subscribers also increased by 15% to 47.6 million.

It’s the PlayStation 4 that has become the record breaker when it comes to games though, with lifetime sales now exceeding 1.577 billion. That’s more than even the PlayStation 2 and means it has sold more games than any other console in history.
