PS5 games launch line-up is the best ‘in the history of PlayStation’ says Sony

Sony’s marketing manager is feeling very confident about the PlayStation 5’s software line-up, as he hints at more unannounced launch games.

This week will go down as a turning point for the PlayStation 5 as Sony begin their mainstream marketing offensive for the new console, with their first TV ad and hints about more new launch games.

‘This spot kicks off PlayStation 5 marketing efforts, and this is just the beginning’, Eric Lempel, head of global marketing for PlayStation, told GamesIndustry.biz, in reference to the new ad. ‘Hopefully it looks high quality, hopefully it captures the imagination of the viewer, and from here, it just gets bigger and better’.

Most of the discussion is concerned with the advert itself, which is genuinely interesting as it had to work around the ongoing restrictions of the pandemic. As a result, it’s almost entirely CGI and the actress filmed all her parts in her own home.

In terms of the PlayStation 5 itself though, Lempel insisted that, ‘The content that will be in the launch window and beyond is incredibly exciting. I would say that this is the best line-up that we’ve ever seen in the history of PlayStation’.

He also hinted that there were more launch window games to be announced, saying that, ‘We’ve revealed some of that content, and naturally there will be more to come, but the way that the developers can engage with this platform, and create these new experiences with known IP as well as unknown IP, is incredibly exciting.’

Of course, he’s the head marketing guy and would say it was the best line-up ever whether it was or not. But given how few launch games have been confirmed so far – with Spider-Man: Miles Morales the highest profile exclusive – it’s hard to take Lempel’s comments seriously with what we know at the moment.

The mention of new IP is interesting though as Sony themselves only announced one, in the form of vehicular combat game Destruction All Stars. Although they’re also publishing Housemarque’s Returnal.

Lempel could merely be referring to the various third party indie titles that have been announced though and without a more detailed comment it’s hard to say whether he really is implying any major new launch window games or not.

With luck we’ll find out this month though, when Sony is rumoured to have another online showcase event.
