PS5 backwards compatibility won't include PS3, PS2, and PS1 games

PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility will only extend as far as the PlayStation 4, with no plans to support older formats.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 is only backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 games.

Rumours of being able to play games from the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and even the original PlayStation were being widely spread long before the PlayStation 5’s official unveiling.

But with the console only a couple of months away from release, Jim Ryan has put an end to those hopes for good.

‘We have been building devices with a focus on PS5-specific engineering,’ he explained when asked about whether the console would be compatible with PlayStation 3 and older games, in an interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, via Google Translate.

‘Among them, PS4 already has 100 million players, so I thought that I would like to play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so I introduced PS4 compatibility.

‘While achieving that, we focused on incorporating high-speed SSDs and the new controller DualSense in parallel. So, unfortunately, compatibility with them has not been achieved.’

It’s unlikely that such a feature will be added in the future either, as Ryan has previously stated that Sony is focused on providing PlayStation 5 owners experiences that can only be enjoyed on PlayStation 5, with none of its exclusives planned for PlayStation 4.

Though that turned out to not be the case, as the likes of Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West, despite being billed as PlayStation 5 exclusives, have been confirmed for PlayStation 4 as well.

The PlayStation 5 will launch on 19 November in the UK.
