Outriders delayed until February, Square Enix adds cross-play

To make up for Outriders’ delay, Square Enix confirms that the game will feature cross-play and offer next gen upgrades for free.

Outriders, Square Enix’s upcoming third person shooter/role-playing game hybrid, was meant to be out by the end of the year.

But due to some behind-the-scenes complications brought on by the current coronavirus pandemic, Square Enix has had to push the game back until 2021.

Thankfully, the wait won’t be that much longer, as the new release date is now February 2.

‘COVID-19 has certainly affected our operations over the past months, but the teams have all worked extremely hard to adapt to changing circumstances,’ writes community manager Toby Palms in an official blog post.

‘While the core game is now in a largely complete state, our testing operations were unfortunately among the most affected by the work-process-restructuring caused by the novel coronavirus. To that end, we need a bit more time to get it right and ensure that the Outriders experience will be as smooth and issue-free as it possibly can be when we launch.’

What is good news is that Outriders will support cross-play, allowing friends to play together regardless of which platform they own.

Also, with it set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners can upgrade to their respective next gen versions for free.

Set on the alien planet of Enoch, Outriders puts you in control of your own custom character, sent to explore this strange world, where a mysterious storm called the Anomaly grants you superpowers.

Outriders will release on February 2, 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. A Stadia release is planned for later in 2021.
