No new Life Is Strange for now, as Dontnod plan brand new IP
With Dontnod opening a new studio in Montreal, the creators of Life Is Strange sound like they’re going all in on a new franchise.
Fans of Dontnod’s Life Is Strange series may have had the similar but otherwise unrelated Tell Me Why to enjoy recently, but they’re most likely hankering for a Life Is Strange 3 sometime soon.
Unfortunately, that wait may be longer than you think, as the original creators are heading up a new branch of the studio in Montreal, Canada, with the intention of moving onto a brand-new IP altogether.
The studio has already begun hiring, but it’s also been filled with numerous members of the Life Is Strange development team.
‘With the formation of a new team on another continent, we are writing a new page of Dontnod’s history,’ says Life Is Strange co-creator Michael Koch.
‘It’s also a new beginning for new characters and original stories that we hope will touch and inspire many players around the world.’
Does this mean no more Life Is Strange at all? Probably not, no, as Koch and executive producer and fellow co-creator Luc Baghadoust have issued a joint statement to Eurogamer, clarifying that they aren’t completely abandoning the series.
‘The teams at Dontnod and us are grateful to have had the chance of bringing Life is Strange games to life, through stories we had deeply at heart and which created such a dear community of players around the world.
‘It doesn’t mean we will not continue working on the Life is Strange franchise in the future but we have also some new exciting ideas we want to explore and that we hope will please all of our Life is Strange community and fans.’
Even if the original creators aren’t involved, there’s always a chance the Tell Me Why crew will make a new Life Is Strange instead. Or maybe Deck Nine, the studio behind prequel game Life Is Strange: Before The Storm, will take another shot?
Regardless, it’s unlikely that the series will be completely abandoned given its popularity.
