New Witcher Tabletop Game Kickstarter Campaign Begins In May

CD Projekt has announced that a Kickstarter campaign for a new board game called The Witcher: Old World, a card-driven adventure game designed for 2-5 players, will launch in May, with delivery expected by April 2022. The game, which is being designed with board game publisher Go On Board, is set years before the saga of Geralt of Rivia in an era when monsters freely roamed the Continent.

“Players take on a role of professional monster slayers who recently completed their brutal training in one of the witcher schools: School of Wolf, Viper, Cat, Bear or Griffin,” CD Projekt stated in its press release. “On their adventures across the Continent, young witchers will face difficult choices, take on contracts, battle monsters — and perhaps find themselves brawling with another witcher in order to defend their school’s honor!”

A tabletop RPG based on Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski’s books was published by MAG in 2001. Another tabletop game based on the video games, produced by R. Talsorian Games, was released in August 2018.

In 2007, Kuźnia Gier developed two card games based on CD Projekt’s The Witcher. The first, The Witcher: Adventure Cardgame, a board game designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek in 2014, was published by Kuźnia Gier; the other, The Witcher Promo Card Game was added to the collector’s edition of The Witcher in some countries.

In addition, a card game, known as Gwent, was included in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as an in-game activity. Two stand-alone games, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, a free-to-play digital collectible card game, and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, an RPG for Microsoft Windows, were subsequently released in 2018. Thronebreaker has since been launched for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android.

CD Projekt Red and Fantasy Flight Games also released physical and digital versions of The Witcher Adventure Game. The digital version is available on Windows, OS X, Android and iOS. The studio has not yet revealed the buy-in cost on The Witcher: Old World Kickstarter, but players can sign up here to be notified when the campaign goes live.
