Two of the most interesting sets Magic: The Gathering has released in the last few years have been Commander Legends and Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. One was the first-ever draftable Commander set and included powerhouse cards like Sol Ring, Vampiric Tutor, Jewelled Lotus, and Hullbreacher. The other was the first time D&D has crossed over into Magic, and gave us mechanics like venturing into the dungeon, dice rolling, and pack tactics.
Magic's latest set combines the two into the verbosely named Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. A made-for-Commander set based on Dungeons & Dragons, the preview season for it is almost here to spill the beans. Here is everything you need to know about Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate's spoilers.
What Is Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur's Gate's Preview Season?
A preview season is part of the promotion of an upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, when the entire card list is revealed. By the end of the season, we know the set's mechanics, any major story details (which we're expecting to be light for Baldur's Gate), and every single card coming in it.
Preview seasons begin with a debut stream, where Wizards of the Coast breaks down the key elements of the set. Any new or returning mechanics are showcased, we see more of the alternate treatments, and many cards are shown off.
After that, the community takes over the proceedings. For the week and a bit after that, both official Magic channels and content creators will reveal cards from across the set (known as "spoilers"). Big names like Commander co-founder Shelden Menery, Amazonian, ManaCurves, Mental Misplay, and Commander Advisory Board member Shivam Bhatt are all scheduled to release cards throughout the season.
Previews will finish with two days of previews of the four Commander decks coming alongside Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. These will also be revealed by prominent names in the Commander community, and each will reveal an entire deck, including the exclusive cards debuting in them.
When Do Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate Spoilers Begin?
The Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate debut stream starts at 16:00 UTC (5PM BST, 12:00 EST) on the Twitch and YouTube channels. The stream itself tends to be fairly short, not running for any longer than one hour.
However, the full season is much, much longer. Starting with the debut stream, the main set previews last for ten days and end on May 26. There is then a short gap, and the Commander deck previews will be spread across May 30 and May 31.
Where To Find Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur's Gate Spoilers
Like earlier sets, TheGamer will be doing daily roundups of every card revealed during the preview season.
However, if you want to follow the reveals live as they happen, a good source is MTGGoldfish – it tweets out cards as they are revealed, and even provides unofficial translations of any card not shown in English.
Scryfall is an excellent way to track new cards, as it updates its database incredibly quickly and is easily searchable. To see every card revealed so far for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, search "set:clb".
Finally, the official Magic: The Gathering site maintains its own card gallery, which it updates each day. This can often be a bit slower than other methods, but it's a good way to go about it if you just want to see every card sprawled out in front of you.
How Are Previews Arranged Behind The Scenes?
Somewhere between a week and two weeks before the start of the preview season, Wizards of the Coast reaches out to content creators, outlets, and stores through its PR channels, and offers them a preview for the new set.
Once non-disclosure agreements are signed (to stop the card from leaking), they are sent an email with image files of each of the cards and a time slot they are expected to reveal it in. These previews are not paid – no money changes hands between a previewer and Wizards. It is literally just a few image files.
How a creator chooses to reveal those cards is entirely up to them. Some simply tweet them out, while others may do videos, skits, or articles about them. Wizards has no input into how these cards are presented – the only rule being you must supply a clear view of the card free of any watermarks or visual effects.
What Is The Next Magic: The Gathering Preview Season?
2022 is a hectic year for Magic, and so you won't have to wait long until more previews come rolling in. In fact, the next preview season is scheduled for just six days after Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate launches.
Double Masters 2022 is a reprint-focused set that features lots of high-powered and valuable cards (as well as an incredibly expensive Collector's Booster). Its previews begin on June 16, 2022.
