More PS5 pre-orders promised over ‘next few days’ as Sony apologies
Sony has admitted that the pre-order situation for PlayStation ‘could have been a lot smoother’ and promised more stock this year.
PS5 pre-orders are set to be begin again ‘over the next few days’ says Sony, as they agree that things ‘could have been a lot smoother’.
They apologised for the chaos that saw pre-orders at top stores start without any announcement and run out within half an hour – long before many fans even realised they’d begun.
This was all the more upsetting because Sony had previously promised to ensure that wouldn’t happen, with PlayStation’s head of marketing, Eric Lempel, saying, ‘I think it’s safe to say, we’ll let you know when pre-orders will happen.’
‘It’s not going to happen with a minute’s notice’, said Lempel in July. ‘We’re going to at some point let you know when you can pre-order a PS5 so please don’t feel like you have to go run and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work.’
Safe to say, that’s – word for word – the exact opposite of what happened, which combined with other issues has caused Sony some serious PR headaches.
The PlayStation 5 showcases may have been slickly presented and filled with impressive looking games but it’s everything that Sony has announced outside of them that’s caused the controversy – from the announcement that several games would also be released on PlayStation 4 to the fact that first party games will cost £70.
As you can see, there’s no indication of exactly when pre-orders will begin again but additional embarrassment may be on its way this Tuesday, 22 September, when Microsoft is due to start its pre-orders for the Xbox Series X/S at 8am.
If that goes smoothly then Sony will be under even more pressure to get their act together, ahead of the PlayStation 5’s launch on 19 November (12 November outside Europe).
