Microsoft Lays Off Under 1,000 Employees Across Xbox, Technology Org, And More

Microsoft has laid off a number of employees across various divisions totaling less than 1,000 workers. The layoffs have affected a number of different departments, including those working for Xbox as well as employees in Strategic Missions and Technology org.

The news that Microsoft has laid off hundreds of its employees comes courtesy of a new report from Business Insider. The exact number of people working for the company to have lost their jobs this week remains unclear, though the rough figure given is in keeping with the reveal by Microsoft back in July that it would be laying off less than one percent of its 180,000 person workforce.

That might well mean there are more layoffs to come, but hopefully that will not be the case. “Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly,” a Microsoft spokesperson has explained. “We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead .”

Reactions from some of those who have been laid off have been gradually appearing on social media. KC Lemson, the product manager in the office of the Chief Technology Officer, who has filled various roles in the company for more than two decades revealed she has been let go. Studio Alpha's Greg Chapman also took to Twitter (thanks, VGC) to share that he and his entire team have been laid off, implying that the studio has been shut down as part of this week's cuts.

Microsoft explained earlier this year that it planned to cut less than one percent of its workforce through fear of a looming recession. While almost everyone shares that same fear, Xbox has continued to make substantial studio acquisitions in the video game world. Bethesda in 2021, and its continued effort to bring Activision Blizzard under the Xbox umbrella for $68.7 billion.
