Loki Confirmed To Be Gender-Fluid In The MCU Disney+ Show
Marvel Entertainment has confirmed that Loki identifies as gender-fluid in the upcoming Disney+ series.
A brand new TV spot promoting the show features a snapshot of the TVA’s (Time Variance Authority) file on the God of Mischief, and defines Loki’s sex as “FLUID”. This makes Loki Laufeyson the first canonically trans character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trickster, who has been played by Tom Hiddleston over the course of the MCU, is canonically bisexual and gender-fluid in the Marvel comics, with his shapeshifting ability allowing him to transform into various female-identifying characters.
Tom Hiddleston, who is an executive producer on the show, has also talked about Loki’s fluidity in the past during an ACE Universe comic book panel with MCU co-star Elizabeth Olsen, explaining that his character is “ambiguous” and can be a “man or a woman”.
Aside from Loki, the upcoming Marvel film The Eternals will reportedly feature the first openly gay relationship between superheroes Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry, and Haaz Sleiman, who plays his husband.
Elsewhere it’s been hinted that the MCU’s Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, is bisexual like in the comics, with fans hoping for an onscreen relationship between her and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Both Larson and Thompson have previously encouraged the on-screen relationship, with Captain Marvel’s producer also acknowledging the fan request.
Loki is set to stream exclusively on Disney+ on June 9 and will star Tom Hiddleston, along with Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Wunmi Mosaku.
