Hideo Kojima Misidentified As Shinzo Abe’s Assassin

Japan's former Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated yesterday while giving a speech. The suspect was immediately apprehended and was later identified as Tetsuya Yamagami. Photos from the scene were widely circulated via the news and internet, leading some internet trolls to draw a likeness between Yamagami and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

The ignorance reached a whole new level when far-right French politician Damien Rieu tweeted out images of Kojima, with a caption that translated to “The extreme left kills”. The tweet has since been deleted, however a news station in Greece also used images of Kojima in its segment about Abe's assassination.

Abe was delivering a speech in the western region of Nara, when he was shot twice by Yamagami. According to reports, he was seriously injured in the neck, but he eventually succumbed to the chest wound – which caused severe internal bleeding. Videos of the incident began flooding social media, but Facebook and Twitter eventually removed all such clips. Abe was a far-right leaning politician, whose divisive policies were built around a platform of ultra-conservative nationalism and populist historical revisionism.

"Tetsuya has confessed to his actions to the police, admitting that he wanted Abe dead because he was disappointed and upset with him," said the news segment, according to Kotaku. "The police have learned that [the culprit] had served in the Navy Special Forces and taught a unit in Medical School on Physiotherapy for dementia patients. He was passionate about Che Guevara."

Various news sources have used images of Kojima wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt, posing with a poster of him, and other such images, to concoct a narrative that the suspect was influenced by the ideologies of Guevara.

According to the BBC Yamagami was apprehended immediately after he shot at Abe. Following an interrogation, Japanese authorities revealed that he used a handmade gun and said that he had a grudge against a "specific organisation". Investigations revealed that similar handmade weapons, as well as explosives, were found at the suspect's residence. Authorities have not disclosed what this "specific organisation" is, or whether Abe is even part of it.

No statement or response has been made by Hideo Kojima as of yet.
