Halo Infinite: Ammo Types And Which Weapons Use Them
Halo Infinite takes a bold new direction with its open-world campaign and free-to-play multiplayer. Each mode contains a wide variety of weapons, with most of the classics returning and several new ones you can experiment with to your heart's content.
In addition to Halo Infinite's hefty weapon lineup, five ammunition types help separate and differentiate most guns from one another, each having different properties, allowing them to showcase their strengths in certain situations. Ammo types aren't a new concept to the Halo universe by any means, but Infinite does an excellent job at conveying what each weapon is capable of, allowing you to make a snap decision on picking one up, depending on your current predicament.
Kinetic ammunition is viable in most situations but is the most effective against unshielded enemies. With a precision kinetic-based weapon, you can one-shot kill most targets who do not have a shield, such as Grunts, Jackals, and even Elites, if you manage to catch them off guard. Furthermore, this is why when facing off against other Spartans in the game's PvP mode, delivering a single burst from your Battle Rifle – or a well-placed shot from the Sidekick – to your opponent's head will drop them if you popped their shield beforehand.
Unfortunately, kinetic weapons are useless against most of Halo Infinite's vehicles and are barely acceptable against shielded targets. It's also worth noting that kinetic weapons are amongst the most common guns in the game, so you will likely have one at arm's reach at all times.

In contrast to kinetic weapons, plasma-based weaponry excels most against shields and struggles against heavily armored objects. This isn't to say that every gun that deals plasma damage is a terrible option against non-shielded enemies. Still, the vast majority of them are aside from the Stalker Rifle, and a near-impossible perfectly placed Pulse Carbine shot.
One of the most disappointing changes in Halo Infinite is the change to plasma weapons, making them lose the ability to EMP vehicles entirely. However, guns such as the Plasma Pistol can still disable enemy shields with a charged shot and swiftly get followed up with a headshot from a kinetic weapon for a quick kill.

For a weapon that's useful in any situation, look no further than the Power Weapons, which use their own unique category of ammunition. While one could argue that the Sniper Rifle uses kinetic ammo, or the Energy Sword uses plasma, Infinite attributes "power" as their ammunition type and can only get refilled in the game's campaign at Power Ammunition Stations.
However, semantics aside, power weapons are the big guns and will dictate the match's outcome when in the right hands. Power weapons are typically set to a timer in the multiplayer and spawn in the middle of the map, having both teams contest over it. Whichever team wins the confrontation will have a solid upper hand if the weapon gets used wisely. These weapons are rare to come by in the campaign but will help you out dramatically in boss encounters and challenging situations.

As touched upon briefly a bit earlier, plasma weapons lost their ability to temporarily EMP vehicles in Halo Infinite, and that's partly due to the newest addition to Halo's arsenal, shock weapons. Taking the spot as the new anti-vehicle ordnance, shock weapons will disable any vehicle within an instant, making them an enormous threat in Big Team Battle.
While it is a bummer to see the Plasma Pistol lose one of its most defining features, being able to quickly disable a Banshee from the sky with a Shock Rifle or stop a raging Chopper in its track with Dynamo Grenades feels just as good to pull off.

"Hardlight" refers to the Forerunner technology, commonly spelled as Hard Light, which transforms light into a solid state for a wide variety of applications, with one being ammunition for some of their weapons. However, with Hardlight belonging to the Forerunners, it is hard to come by, making it a rarity to find out and about.
Additionally, Forerunner weapons are useful in just about any situation but are pretty hard to get the hang of as a result. Whether your opponent has shields, armor, or is inside a vehicle, a hardlight powered weapon can be the last thing they see if in the right hands.
