GTA 5 Has Almost Sold More Than Every Final Fantasy Game Combined

2022 will mark nine years since GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360. It will also be the year GTA 5's enhanced edition arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. March 15, to be exact, at which point GTA Online will also be free to anyone on PS5, even if you don't own a copy of GTA 5. An absolute juggernaut of a game, and as highlighted in Take-Two Interactive's most recent financial call, it's showing no signs of slowing down.

Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick revealed GTA 5 has now sold more than 160 million copies worldwide. That's impressive for more than the obvious reasons. For starters, that easily makes it one of the best-selling games of all time. It also means GTA 5 has sold in excess of five million copies every quarter for the past year. Again, despite having launched all the way back in 2013.

When you directly compare GTA 5's success to other games, or even entire series, then that 160 million sold number becomes even more unbelievable. As highlighted by Jason Schreier, GTA 5 alone has now sold more than every Resident Evil game combined. A lot more actually, as the latest figures for the horror game peg the series at 123 million sold. Those figures are correct as of the end of 2021, so even account for the success of Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil isn't the only series to have been surpassed by GTA 5. Even Assassin's Creed, yes all of its games combined, is now in the rearview mirror of Rockstar's greatest accomplishment. 155 million sold so far. Those figures haven't been updated since November 2020, so may well be a little higher now is Valhalla has continued to sell.

The next series in Rockstar's crosshairs is Final Fantasy. That's right, a series that launched its first game in 1987 and is currently preparing for the arrival of its 16th installment, not to mention all the remakes, remasters, and spinoffs, has almost been outsold by one game that isn't even nine years old yet. Pretty incredible, and with the enhanced edition launching during this current quarter, it's very likely GTA 5 will breeze past 165 million sold within the next three months.
