God Of War Ragnarok Developer Says The Goal Was To Have Better Side Missions Than The Witcher 3

A developer working on God of War Ragnarok has responded to the recent glowing reviews, noting that his goal when working on the game was to create side-missions that surpassed The Witcher 3.

Back when The Witcher 3 released in 2015, one of the things that it was praised for the most was how strong all of its side-quests were. Despite the fact that the game was absolutely massive and stuffed with things to do, each side-quest had a lot of time and effort poured into them, with unique characters and scenarios that made them worth searching out. It seems that legacy is still strong, as it's something that developers are trying to surpass even seven years later.

Following the review embargo for God of War Ragnarok, The Washington Post's Gene Park shared that he thought that Ragnarok's side missions finally surpassed The Witcher 3's, calling them "the best side quests I've ever played in an adventure game". This drew the attention of Ragnarok's lead player investment designer, Anthony DiMento, who retweeted Gene and revealed that was his intention from the start.

DiMento said, "This was the goal I set for the optional content in God of War Ragnarok. The Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time… It didn't seem possible, but this was literally the goal. Reading this felt amazing."

Not only is this high praise from Park and lovely for DiMento to see, but it shows just how much of a reputation The Witcher 3 has for its side-quests, as some developers clearly view it as the industry's benchmark and something to aim towards.

DiMento wasn't the only Sony Santa Monica to see and reply to the praise, either. Lead level designer Luis Sanchez also shared the tweet and commented on it, saying, "As the Level Lead on the exploration content the recognition means so much. We pour everything into every inch of this game. The team doesn’t treat it as just side content, everything is crafted to enhance the world and player experience. So proud of what we accomplished."
