Flight Simulator developer Asobo starts new Microsoft project as VR beta begins
Microsoft Flight Simulator has been such a success the developer is already working on a new game, as well as VR support.
A ruthlessly realistic flight simulator with no combat or anything in the way of traditional gameplay isn’t the most predictable success story but Microsoft Flight Simulator has already sold 1 million copies and been widely acclaimed for its visuals.
French developer Asobo has already committed to supporting the game for a whole decade but according to an article in La Tribune they are also already working on two new projects.
One is for Focus Home Entertainment and is very likely to be a follow-up to the excellent A Plague Tale: Innocence. The other is for Microsoft and is a complete mystery…
The only obvious guess for the Microsoft project is that it could be some kind of reboot for Microsoft Train Simulator, Microsoft Space Simulator, or Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator.
Microsoft Train Simulator is relatively unlikely as Train Sim World already fills that niche, but Space Simulator and Combat Flight Simulator do seems like strong possibilities, if Microsoft is interested in reviving all its old simulator franchises.
If it’s anything else though Asobo’s résumé is so varied it’s impossible to guess what they might do next, considering they’ve worked on everything from The Crew to Zoo Tycoon.
The other possibility is that the project is just the Xbox version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, but since that’s already been confirmed it shouldn’t be being treated as a secret.
In other Flight Simulator news, Asobo has started asking for beta testers to help try out its VR mode for the game, with sign-ups already open here.
The first phase of the closed beta will only be for WMR (Windows Mixed Reality) headsets but the second phase will encompass other types as well.
