FIFA 21 digital sales are biggest in series history
Digital sales of FIFA 21 have almost made up for the drop in physical sales, and are likely to improve further with the next gen versions.
Despite debuting at number one in the UK charts, FIFA 21 still sold less than last year’s version when it came to physical sales.
However, it has now been reported, courtesy of GamesIndustry.biz, that the game’s digital sales have increased by over 31% on last year.
While this doesn’t quite make up for the 41% drop in physical sales, it is apparently the first time that a FIFA game has sold better digitally than physically. These are also the biggest digital sales in the series’ history.
Given that the FIFA games’ physical versions have usually always performed better, it’s suspected that some fans have held off buying it and are choosing to wait for the upcoming next gen releases.
As usual, chart creators GfK have failed to release any sales information, or exact percentage breakdowns, but while the next gen launch does make this an atypical year the trend towards digital sales is certain to continue.
Anyone who owns FIFA 21 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is entitled to a free next gen upgrade to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X respectively, but an uptick in sales is still expected.
The next gen versions won’t have any exclusive content or features, but they will benefit from faster load times and improved visuals.
Current gen owners may as well take advantage of the next gen upgrade, as EA did previously confirm that cross-play isn’t included, meaning, for example, PlayStation 5 owners can only play with other PlayStation 5 owners.
FIFA 21 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia releases will come at a later date.
