Dark Souls Games Lose Multiplayer Tag On Steam After Servers Went Dark In January
Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, and Dark Souls: Remastered have all lost their multiplayer tags on Steam. The move comes after Bandai Namco turned off the Dark Souls multiplayer servers in January to prevent a dangerous exploit from potentially damaging player computers.
The change was first spotted by The OuterHaven (via GamesRadar) who noted that all iterations of Dark Souls on Steam are now listed as singleplayer only. Multiplayer tags such as “online co-op” and “online PvP” that were previously present are now nowhere to be found.
However, the game descriptions for the Dark Souls games still mention multiplayer features such as a “PvP arena & online matchmaking system” in Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition and an “improved online interaction” for “cooperative and competitive play” in Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls Remastered notes multiplayer for “up to 6 players with dedicated servers.”
Multiplayer functionality for the entire Dark Souls franchise was turned off last January after a dangerous exploit was discovered that could allow hackers to access a player’s login information, install malware, or even damage a player’s PC. News of the exploit came just months before the release of Elden Ring, with Bandai Namco saying it would focus its efforts to ensure Elden Ring doesn’t suffer a similar exploit while returning to the Dark Souls series later.
Months after the servers were taken offline and over a month after Elden Ring was released to over 12 million in sales, Bandai Namco has still not revealed how the exploit is performed or when the Dark Souls multiplayer servers will come back online.
As OuterHaven notes, this has some Dark Souls players worried that Bandai Namco has forgotten about Dark Souls and that the Elden Ring predecessors will remain singleplayer games forevermore. Bandai Namco hasn’t commended on the exploit since last February when it promised to reveal details of the hack alongside plans for a correction.
