Call of Duty Warzone 2 leaks, rumours and predictions after Microsoft takeover

It's been almost three years since the release of Call of Duty's hit battle royale game Warzone. The game has undergone several changes since its arrival in March 2020, but it looks like Activision is keen to take the popular title even further with a sequel.

Many fans of the game have been anticipating Call of Duty: Warzone 2, the rumoured sequel to the popular free-to-play Call of Duty spin-off.

Though Activision hasn't officially confirmed the sequel, it's a very likely possibility since Call of Duty is no stranger to sequels. For now here's everything we know about Warzone 2 including rumours, leaks and predictions.

Is Call of Duty : Warzone 2 actually happening?

It seems likely that Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is happening, according to Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier, who has accurately predicted unannounced games and delays for years.

Schreier has said that Warzone 2 is apparently on a list of upcoming Call of Duty games that will release on PlayStation despite Microsoft's acquisition of Activision.

Screier reported: "The deal also includes a planned new iteration of Call of Duty Warzone, the lucrative free-to-play game that was released in 2020."

This report also matches one by Tom Henderson, a freelance writer who has previously leaked accurate information about Call of Duty in the past.

When will be Warzone 2 released?

Warzone 2 is apparently scheduled for a 2023 release, according to Bloomberg. Schreier mentions the game next to another game called "COD2023", which hints that Activision might continue to make standalone CoD games separately from Warzone.

There are already rumours that 2022's CoD game will be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, but it's unclear if the Warzone 2 game would be based on whatever CoD's 2023 main game is, or something completely separate.

What cosmetics will be part of Warzone 2?

It's too early to confirm exactly what could be part of the CoD sequel. However, Tom Henderson has said Warzone 2 will not have "past weapon integrations" with Warzone, which would mean any existing progression and cosmetics that players already have may be thrown out.

According to him, the Warzone sequel would apparently be a "completely new game for the better hardware". This means it will only release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, not PS4 or Xbox One.

How would the Microsoft acquisition affect Call of Duty: Warzone 2?

Right now, it's not likely to make much of a difference. Microsoft and Activision have said that the two companies will more or less operate as two separate entities until the acquisition deal officially closes, which could take a year or more.

Bloomberg claims that Activision will honour its plan to release CoD on PlayStation, which means that for the next few years all Call of Duty games will happen as originally planned before Microsoft bought it.

But the new relationship between Activision and Microsoft could see new Call of Duty games launch on Game Pass going forward.
