Potential VAC verification error fix – August 6 Steam crash

A Steam crash on August 6 has brought even more issues to those trying to play Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The recent Trusted Mode update to CS:GO left much to be desired and seemed to cause many issues while not exactly appearing to combat the cheating as well as many had hoped.

With the latest crash which took place at roughly 16:09 PDT yesterday, players are now starting to receive VAC verification errors when attempting to launch the game.

There’s been no official word from Valve and no hotfixes pushed to address the problem, however, there has been a workaround which seems to be solving the issue for some.

You can find the potential workaround thanks to MotoNomadic’s thread on Reddit.

  1. Navigate to your Steam folder in Program Files (x86) if you are on Windows. The directory is typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam.
  2. Go into your “bin” folder and find the SteamService.exe file.
  3. Copy and paste it into C:\Program Files (x86)\commonfiles\steam.
  4. Replace the existing file.
  5. Boot up Steam and CS:GO again to test if it’s worked.
