Executive Hires Signal That Comcast Spectator is Serious About G4 Relaunch

G4, the gaming network that Comcast Spectacor is reincarnating this year, announced this afternoon a handful of executive hires, as it ramps up toward launching this summer.

Comcast Spectacor Gaming announced that former Activision Blizzard salesperson Josh Cella, who now serves as chief revenue officer of the division, will lead distribution and monetization efforts for G4, in a move SBJ Esports first reported last July.

He’ll be joined by former Xandr/Warner Media group vice president Nicole Cleary, who becomes vice president of client partnerships, as well as former NBA executive Umar Hassain, who joins as G4’s vice president of content distribution and partnerships. Hussain will be responsible for managing and negotiating the distribution of G4 across TV, OTT, social and digital platforms.

G4 has yet to announce exactly when it will launch this summer, but it has already started previewing some of its efforts and is sending signals to the industry that Comcast is putting significant resources behind this effort.

Formerly, G4 was the linear TV channel launched in 2002 that focused on gaming but was eventually shuttered in 2014. It is expected to be more digitally focused this time although not exclusively.

There is some competition in the space, as networks like Venn and the now-defunct show Cheddar Esports have sprung up in the last couple years in a bid to cover the growing competitive gaming/streamer industry.
