Dimez, Ariel Powers, and More Join New Georgia Project to ‘Twitch The Vote’

Atlanta-based voting advocacy group New Georgia Project will host a live stream on Twitch to encourage first-time voters to go to the polls and vote on Nov. 3. The 12-hour Twitch The Vote marathon stream (which will run from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Nov. 3), will feature a panel discussion, competitions, live music performances, giveaways, and more in a bid to encourage people to get out to the polls and vote. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the United States, voting advocacy groups such as New Georgia Project are having to find new ways of engaging voters in a safe and effective way, as traditional methods such as door-to-door canvassing have been stalled by concerns over safety.

As of this writing more than 2M people have voted in the state, which has a population of more than 10M.

People taking part in the stream includes WNBA Washington Mystics star and streamer Aerial Powers, Mavs Gaming player Artreyo “Dimez” Boyd, Madden NFL pro Chris “Dubby” McFarland, Wizards District Gaming’s Ryan “Dayfri” Conger, Jazz Gaming’s Brent “Lord Beezus” Aasgaard, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate pro Eric “ESAM” Lew, fighting game pro Brian “Cosmos” Kalu, and Madden Bowl 20 Champion and XSET pro player Raidel “Joke” Brito.

Other notable attendees include CNN Hero of the Year and CEO of Junub Games Lual Mayen, gaming and esports personality Malik Forté, The Download (on VENN) host Erin Ashley Simon, social media influencer Karen Civil, artist Brandan “Bmike” Odums, hip hop artist Curren$y (Shante Scott Franklin), DJ Mannie Fresh, Asylum Record VP A&R Wayne “Wayno” Clark, YouTube personality Ivy Rivera, New Georgia Project President Nse Ufot, and many others to be announced.

Games being played during the stream will include NBA 2K21, Madden NFL, Fortnite, Among Us, and Super Smash Bros.

The New Georgia Project describes itself as a “nonpartisan effort” to register Georgians, particularly in historically marginalized communities of color. It was founded by Stacey Abrams, who served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 10 years and ran for Governor of the state in 2018. She is also the founder of Fair Fight Action, an organization that addresses voter suppression efforts in Georgia and Texas.

In addition to the stream marathon, New Georgia Project will offer rides to voters who need transportation to the polls and deploy gaming trucks near select polling locations in Atlanta, Union City, East Point, and Macon on Election Day.

Twitch is increasingly becoming a viable platform for politicians and advocacy groups to directly interact with the community. Earlier this week U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) joined fellow Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and who’s who of Twitch personalities to promote voting and play Among Us with great success. Voter advocacy group Gamers.Vote is also using social media and popular streaming platforms to promote voter registration and participation in this year’s election. The group is partnering with VENN, MTV, and Viacom’s Vote For Your Life to host a $40K USD Fall Guys charity stream Oct. 23 to promote voter education.
