Animal Crossing's First Summer Update Is Available Now

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received the first part of its free summer content update on July 3, including the ability to swim and hunt for new marine life. You’ll now be able to explore more of the world and see new creatures in this update. It isn’t even the only summer update coming to the game, as the “Wave 2” update will arrive further down the road.

Wave 1 of the Summer Update lets you dive into the ocean from any edge of your island, swimming around in search of new marine life that you can donate to museum curator Blathers. This includes star fish (or sea stars), anemone, and garden eels, as seen in the trailer below. Blathers will have plenty of facts to tell you about your new finds, in addition to simply having new items to donate.

The updatealso introduces the mermaid crafting set, which can be obtained through interactions with Pascal. You’ll be able to get new DIY recipes from Pascal–a red sea otter that would appear weekly in previous Animal Crossing entries–by trading scallops with him, but it’s unclear if he’ll be around as sparsely as Redd (who was introduced in an earlier update). There’s also a new encounter with Gulliver, although exactly what that results in isn’t made clear.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be getting even more free content in August as part of the second wave of the Summer Update, with Nintendo teasing more news on it soon. It’s been a stellar first-party title for both Nintendo and Nintendo Switch players, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling more than 13 million copies during its first six weeks on sale.

Animal Crossing: Last Chance For These Limited-Time Seasonal Items

Summer has arrived in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Northern Hemisphere players. Not only does that mean there are new bugs and fish to catch in the game, but some new seasonal items are also now available to collect.

[Update: Time is running out to grab these new seasonal items. While the Father’s Day mug and Handmade cape and crown are no longer available, you have until July 6 to buy the Summer-solstice crown and Winter-solstice sweater. You’ll find both items under the Seasonal tab in the Nook Shopping menu.]

Nook Inc. has stocked its seasonal catalog with a handful of new, limited-time items. In addition to the Father’s Day mug, you can pick up a Handmade cape and Handmade crown in honor of International Children’s Day. A Summer-solstice crown and Winter-solstice sweater have also been added.

The Handmade crown, cape, and Father’s Day mug will all be available to purchase until June 30, while the Summer-solstice crown and Winter-solstice sweater will be available until July 6. To get the items, access the Nook Shopping menu from the Nook Stop terminal in your Resident Services building and flip to the seasonal tab.

That’s not all that’s new in Animal Crossing this month. June is wedding season, and you can earn some special furniture as part of a limited-time event. All month long, you can travel to Harv’s Island and help the llama couple Reese and Cyrus celebrate their anniversary by taking wedding photos of them. Do a good enough job and you’ll earn a new type of currency called heart crystals, which you can exchange for wedding furniture and other items.

If your game is set to the Northern Hemisphere, you’ll also find a new material called summer shells. These can be used in crafting some new seasonal DIY recipes that you’ll find in balloons and message bottles. However, as with the cherry blossom petals that appeared in spring, these shells and recipes will only be available for a limited time, from June to August (or December to February in the Southern Hemisphere).

I spent a month away from Animal Crossing and now everything is different

Back in April, I felt like I’d never get sick of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There’s just so much to do, collect, and create — my island was (and still is) an ongoing project, always something to do or a design to tweak. I was in the midst of an island renovation when I started going days — then weeks — between play sessions. I’d successfully moved all villager houses, created a new setup for the museum, and planted a field of yellow flowers in front of my house.

Eventually, more than a month passed since the last time I’d played New Horizons, save a quick check-in to grab a screenshot for work. Every time I’d think about playing the game, I felt sort of guilty; when I returned, my island was certainly going to be covered in weeds. I wasn’t sure if I could handle my villagers passively aggressively shaming me. The wedding update wasn’t enough to pull me back into the game, to face the judgement of my villagers. But you know what is? Swimming!

Animal Crossing players are building in-game memorials: ‘It’s kind of like she’s living on in the game’

In preparation for the first wave of summer updates, I’ve sheepishly returned to Sears (my island). And, indeed, each one of my villagers took it upon themselves to tell me how much I’d disappointed them. For one, I missed Marina’s birthday. Lionel absolutely roasted me: “So, the famous Nicole has finally decided to grace me with an appearance!” Even Samson, who I’m disappointed to say hasn’t moved out, had a quip for me: “It’s been a while! Did you go back to the mainland?” He asked. “Huh? You haven’t left the island? But I’ve been swim training for weeks to come visit you.” (Ugh.)

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon

There are sticks and weeds everywhere. (New summer weeds, though!) I don’t recognize any of the bugs or fish. Sears has changed, man. But I think it’s a good thing, for me, at least. I played so frantically over the first few months that Nintendo’s slow drip of content wasn’t enough to keep me interested. Now that things have cooled down, it feels like I can play New Horizons at a manageable pace, slowly discovering the new creatures around the island and indulging in the new seasonal activities.

On Friday, Nintendo’s releasing its first wave of summer content — including swimming, Pascal, and new recipes to create. Gulliver, too, is getting a seasonal makeover. I’m eager to dive head first into the update, but I think I’ll try to have some self-control. After all, I’m not sure I could handle disappointing Marina again.

New Smash Bros. Ultimate Freebie Available For Switch Online Members

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next DLC character, Min Min from Arms, has arrived alongside the title’s 8.0 update, but that’s not all that’s new for the game. On top of that, Nintendo is giving away another Smash Bros. freebie for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

Right now, NSO members can grab a new Spirit Board Challenge Pack for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Like previous freebies, this pack contains a handful of helpful items for the game’s Spirit Board mode. You’ll get the following:

  • All Primaries x10
  • All Supports x10
  • Rematch x5
  • Sluggish Shield x10
  • Shield Spacer x10

To claim the Spirit Board Challenge Pack, go into the Switch Eshop and select the Nintendo Switch Online option on the left sidebar. From there, you’ll see the pack listed near the top of the page under exclusive offers. Click on the pack and select Download to claim it.

Like previous Spirit Board Challenge Packs, this freebie is only available to those who have an active paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription; you can’t claim the pack during a free trial period. Individual NSO memberships cost $4 USD for one, $8 USD for three months, and $20 USD for one year, while an annual family plan runs for $35 USD.

That’s not the only freebie that NSO subscribers can claim right now; Nintendo is also giving away an exclusive Nook Inc. rug for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Meanwhile, Tetris 99–which is free to download and play for NSO members–is getting a Xenoblade Chronicles crossover theme as part of next week’s Maximus Cup event.

As for Min Min, she’s available alongside a new stage–Spring Stadium–and a handful of Arms music tracks. The Min Min challenger pack is available individually for $6 USD or as part of Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which costs $30 USD and grants holders access to all six upcoming DLC characters as they release.

Pokemon: How To Claim The Free Shiny Zeraora From Pokemon Home

Pokemon Sword and Shield players can grab another free Pokemon for a limited time. Because more than one million trainers defeated the Mythical Pokemon Zeraora in Max Raids this month, all players will be able to receive a free Shiny Zeraora right now via the mobile version of Pokemon Home. Here’s how to claim it.

Everyone who has transferred a Pokemon from Sword or Shield into Home, or vice versa, between June 17 and July 6 will be able to claim the free Mythical Pokemon, even if you haven’t participated in a Zeraora Raid. Once you’ve met that requirement, follow these steps to receive your Shiny Zeraora:

  • Select the Menu button at the bottom of the screen
  • Select Mystery Gift
  • Select Gift Box
  • Tap on the Pokemon in the Gift Box and select Receive

Alongside Zeraora, you’ll also get a download code to redeem in Sword or Shield for a handful of Armorite Ore. These are new items introduced in Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion, and they have several uses. You can pay Ore to an NPC inside the Master Dojo to teach a Pokemon brand-new moves, or you can give some to Digging Pa to dig up more Watts, which are necessary to upgrade the dojo with additional amenities.

The Shiny Zeraora distribution ends at 4:59 PM PT on July 6, so you’ll only have until then to claim the Pokemon. You can read more details about the distribution on the official Pokemon website.

Shiny Zeraora isn’t the only free Pokemon you can claim in Pokemon Home. After transferring a Pokemon to the cloud service, you’ll also receive all three Galar starters: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. You’ll likewise find these monsters waiting inside your Gift Box, and each one has its Hidden Ability, which weren’t previously available in Sword and Shield.

We gave Sword and Shield’s first expansion an 8/10 in our Isle of Armor review. Critic Kallie Plagge wrote, “DLC is new to the main-series Pokemon games, and it’s certainly a great alternative to replaying the same game a year or two later when the souped-up rerelease comes out. But like the traditional third or ‘Ultra’ version, The Isle of Armor does refine much of the experience we had in vanilla Sword and Shield, with a more interesting Wild Area to explore and some small quality-of-life tweaks that further the progress Gen 8 has made in that regard.”

Games With Gold: July 2020's First Batch Of Xbox One Games Out Now

[Update 7/1: The first batch of games are available for free now, including WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship and Saints Row 2. The next batch will be available beginning July 16.]

June is almost over, so it’s nearly time for a refreshed Games with Gold lineup. Microsoft has announced the four games Xbox Live Gold subscribers can claim in July. Like usual, the lineup includes two Xbox One games and two backward compatible Xbox 360 games. In what’s becoming a trend, July’s Xbox One offerings will likely be of interest to racing and sports fans.

All throughout July, you can grab WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship, a rally racing game that released last year. WRC 8 has a robust single-player career mode and more than 100 tracks across 14 countries. Online multiplayer boasts weekly challenges and an esports mode with tournaments. New to the series with WRC 8 is the dynamic weather system, which alters track conditions by introducing elements such as rain and snow.

The second Xbox One game, Dunk Lords, will be available from July 16 to August 16. Dunk Lords is a beat ’em up basketball game with a large cast of characters with unique attacks. It’s over-the-top by design, combining arcade basketball with combat. Dunk Lords has a story mode that can be played solo or cooperatively with another player, a cooperative gauntlet mode, and an arcade mode that supports up to four players.

For the first half of the month, subscribers can claim Saints Row 2, the Xbox 360 era open-world action game which puts in the role of the leader of the Third Street Saints. Saints Row 2 is where the franchise started to lean into a comedic tone, separating itself from the similar gameplay style of Grand Theft Auto.

And in the back half of the month, you can grab Juju, a cute platformer starring a shaman panda and his lizard pal Peyo.

Some of June’s freebies are still available now, so don’t forget to grab them before they’re gone. Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse and Sine Mora are free until June 30, while Coffee Talk is free until July 15.

Switch Eshop Credit Is Up For Grabs In Nintendo's Next Splatoon 2 Tournament

Nintendo is hosting another competition in its colorful Switch shooter Splatoon 2 later this month. The Turf War July 2020 tournament kicks off on Saturday, July 18, and the prize is $25 USD in My Nintendo Gold points.

Every member of the winning team will take home 2,500 My Nintendo Gold points, which can either be redeemed for rewards on the My Nintendo website or used as credit toward select games and DLC on the Switch Eshop. The tournament is open to players in North America, and each match will be contested in Turf War.

Registration is open now until July 18, 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. To enter, you and your teammates will need to create an account on Battlefy. You can read the full rules for the Turf War July 2020 tournament here.

Although Splatoon 2 is no longer receiving content updates, Nintendo continues to periodically release patches for the game. The company recently rolled out the version 5.2.2 update, which resolved two exploits–including one that allowed players to reach the opposing team’s spawn point in Starfish Mainstage–but didn’t make any other balance adjustments. You can read the patch notes on Nintendo’s support website.

In other Switch news, Tetris 99 is kicking off its next in-game competition this week. The game’s 14th Maximus Cup takes place from July 3-6, and everyone who amasses at least 100 points during the competition will unlock a cool Xenoblade Chronicles theme.

An Hour Before Its Reveal, Crysis Remastered And Its Trailer Delayed

Crysis Remastered was supposed to debut its gameplay reveal trailer today. Instead, Crytek announced that the remaster has been delayed by “a few weeks” from its original July 23 date after a leaked gameplay trailer resulted in some upset fans. Several YouTube commenters joked that Crytek had remastered “the console version” of the famously taxing PC game.

“The features you’re looking forward to are already set, but we want to take the time on polishing the game,” a portion of the statement reads. “You might be aware of the leak yesterday, and we want you to know: we’ve seen all the reactions – the good and the bad – and we’re listening!”

A previous store description for the game stated that it would have “remastered graphics optimized for a new generation of hardware.” What exactly that means remains to be seen, as it’s unclear what hardware the leaked trailer was running on. However, Crysis Remastered does represent the first time that the Crysis series has come to the Nintendo Switch.

The original Crysis was considered a landmark technical achievement on its original release in 2007, with only the most high-spec gaming PCs able to handle it on its highest settings. It even led to the game becoming a bit of a meme, with players joking that not even supercomputers could run Crysis. In our Crysis review, our critic gave it a 9.5/10: “If you put it all together, Crysis is just remarkable. This is a game that pushes the envelope in terms of both technology and gameplay and does so with aplomb. Crysis raises the expectations for every shooter to follow when it comes to graphics, interactivity, environments, immersiveness, AI, and gameplay. Quite simply, Crysis represents the first-person shooter at its finest, most evolved form.”

Skater XL Will Launch With Three Community-Created Maps Included

When Skater XL launches on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on July 28, it will contain three maps created by the game’s modding community during the game’s Early Access period on Steam. The maps will be a part of the game for all players.

The three maps are Streets (by Jean-Olive), Hűdland Training Facility (by Pactole), and Grant Skate Park (by Theo). A trailer and screenshots for these maps have been released, showcasing the work of the game’s community. Theo joined the development team after creating Grant Skate Park, which will debut in the game’s 1.0 release.

https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/9EwA-Imsb78

In a statement released to press, developer Easy Days Studio co-founder Dain Hedgpeth praised the game’s modding community, which consists of 84,000 people who “have created thousands of amazing maps, fake skate brands and gear” in the game. states Dain Hedgpeth, Co-founder of Easy Day Studios. “Their creativity and passion have not only inspired us, but has become an integral part of the Skater XL experience,” he says, “and we want to pay homage to this by including some of their work at launch.”

Hedgpeth notes that this is “just the beginning” of the studio’s plans to highlight community-created content.

Grant Skate Park is a recreation of the iconic Chicago public skatepark, with a few small changes to make it easier to skate in a game. Streets brings together numerous street spots from different parks, and Hűdland Training Facility is an entirely original creation.

Skater XL faces some tough competition for skateboarding fans, as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is also releasing later this year on September 4. XL has drawn comparisons to the Skate franchise, but the next Skate game was only just announced, and is likely to be a long time away from release.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.
